Ok Marines, once again we are trying to come to some form of consensus here.

So we are beginning at the beginning: which jacket should be used as the base for the Dress Blues project?

1- A USMC Dress Blues jacket:

Image

Pros-

Has the overall shape we all like: high collar, long coat (as opposed to short "Ike" jacket). Relatively available and affordable.

Cons-

Must have several alterations and CM patches added to set it apart from being a USMC uniform (clearly the last source of contention with this project). Might not be available in everyone's size.

2- Custom Honor Guard jacket (IE Marlow White):

Image

Pros-

Not a USMC jacket, so we are open to however we would like to customize it. Tailor made to everyone's size requirements.

Cons-

Price.

Going with a cheap version would be unacceptable- the materials and workmanship must be high quality. If the custom option wins, we can still make the effort to see if a reduction in price (such as a group order) is at all possible.

On the other hand if the USMC jacket wins, I would not want Derek (DevilDog) to be inundated with requests for a new jacket. They are on ebay and are averaging $100 (they seem to be slightly in demand as the Marine Corps birthday approaches- Nov 10th).

Would it be possible to put up an image of each candidate for those who haven't been following the dress blues thread closely?

Good idea...

But just be a bit snooty (just a bit), I wouldn't want anyone voting who doesn't have a vested interest in this project.

In other words- if you haven't been actively posting/closely watching the thread itself like the dozen or so of us there, and don't plan on making this costume anytime soon (or at all), please don't influence the results.

It's essentially a toss-up, it seems. I'm sure not everyone has voted yet, though.

I'm thrown on this one because a) I've not been watching the thread as closely as I should have and its gotten away from me and b) I don't have the cash right now to make one.

I think I'll hold off on making this one for now and not vote per Kev's request. But I must say they truly are beautiful and I really would love to have one done for DC*08 at the latest.

Well.. I didn't want to come off sounding harsh...

Basically I was trying to say if you have no interest whatsoever in this uniform, don't vote for the hell of it.

I'm at a quandry. I'm not sure I would do the costume with the USCM jacket at all. Yet, unless we find a much better deal on the Marlow, I won't be doing that, either.

I'm in total agreement about not skimping on quality. But the reality is I'm not paying hundreds of dollars for a jacket.

So my vote tends for Marlow but I don't know if I should really have a say if I'm not sure if I'd even be participating in the end.

It's a tough call. The price is the bottom line for many of us.

Really it also boils down to the feelings towards using a USMC tunic for this project (respect for the uniform so to speak).

This is most likely what we will receive from Marlow White:

This is a USMC tunic with some of the piping (and cuff buttons) removed:

And finally the cuff piping removed as well:

We have to come to a decision here guys. I know it's still early, and we have several months to put this together, but it feels like we are never going to come to a concensus at this rate.

The chances are very slim that we will be able to get custom jackets for well under $300.

Siegelsuniforms.com makes a similar high collar coat (with even more piping that the Marlow White jacket):

Notice the piping down the front seam and on the cuffs. (They could have found a more clean shaven looking model too huh?  )

Here is the image brightened up to show a bit of the pocket detail:

These are $295. I could email them to see if they provide a quantity discount- and how many we would need to order. If we could get them for say $250 each (or hopefully less) what would you all think?

Would we still want these if they were $295?

Bottom line for me Kevin is that I'll go forward with this project in time for next year if it's cost effective... if it's too expensive for me, it will have to wait until 2009. I've spent an enormous amount of money on my Mobile Infantry and Ghostbuster stuff this year... anything else exhorbitant for now would be plain madness.

Ooooh.... Ghostbuster stuff would be cool too...

*ponders*

I have comments on the USMC jacket piping, which I'll post in the other thread.

I echo Dom's statement. While I'm not sure that my Ghostbusters Proton Pack could survive shipping, I too am the proud new owner of a set of SST gear. (Which is planned for Sunday afternoon)

Sooooo, that said, I am of course, still in for this. The total cost has got to be looked at seriously though. It appears that the jacket will be anywhere from $69-$300. A huge range to be sure, but what we are looking at.

The Marine style jacket, with it's Mandarin collar drives the price.

The "accessories", cover, Sam Browne belt, pants, shoes are a mere extension of the main "attraction"...

Based only on jacket aesthetics and ignoring my price quandry, I voted. I think the Marlow looks very smart. I like the minimal piping and the straight cuffs.
