In the extras in the Quad DVD set they stated that the original towing vehicle weighed in the area of 60 tons, and they stripped about 30-40 tons from it before doing the custom work on it.
There was a photo somone shared from the UK release either of the film or Alien War (sorry, memory failing...) and the APC was there on display, as well as some fans dressed as marines.
It's one of those mysteries from the film everyone would like to know about.
I'm suprised nobody has attempted to "play Sherlock" and perhaps ask about. Start with Heathrow asking if there was anyone in administration working there in 1986, and expand outward, hitting fabrication shops, and perhaps staff at Pinewood, maybe even the Alien War creators who had access to screen used props at the time.
It wouldn't be easy or fast, but you could make a research project out of it. Heck, maybe even a filmed documentary. If I was local, I'd do it myself. There's just this little problem of an ocean seperating us.
