The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

ok folks. while im waiting for Mr Spat to build and send me my armour, i thought i would start trying different camo colors and techniques etc. went and purchased all the screen accurate humbrol paints today (apart from one, guess which! hehe). but looking at the main green color used for the film it seemed a tad blue to me. so i also purchased a kind of greener version. one that to me seemed more accurate to what we see on screen. i tested both options out on some scrap plastic and weathered the lower half of each to give you a rough idea of what the final piece will look (the whole theme of my uscm gear is worn, dirty and beaten).

oh and pls excuse how badly the black weathering has been done. just quicky used a rattle can spray rather than my airbrush, which i will use on my actual armour.

so which one you think looks best? screen accurate on the right or screen seen on the left? all comments, thoughts, ideas etc will be greatly appreciated . thanks!! :)

Left hand one looks better, although it may be less 'screen accurate'... Looks very close to old school UK DPM actually.

Take a look in my photobucket on page 2. These are pics that I got from someone else who posted em awhile back of genuine Apone armour. I forgot who and apologize. Depending on the lighting I'm leaning towards the left. Up close with a white flash though it looks kinda like the right.

Tough decision mate!

The pics at the top of the page are of Geordi wearing Harry's screen used Hudson armour. They were taken at the NSC in Leicester last year.

Cheers

Are you sure you got the correct Humbrol green? I agree it looks too blue on the right...and I know my can doesn't look like that.

BTW, we came to a consensus a while back that the "black" isn't black, it's a very dark green. I made the switch halfway through painting my armor and the dark green looks tons better.

Looking good!

My 2 cents:

I agree. No Black.

As for the green, I would go somewhere in between.

And maybe ease back on the black overspray.

I think you'll get better results with graphite or soot then
applying a dull clear coat.

Keep up the good work!

Damn Dave, you've been holding out on me!

I'd say the color on the left only a tad lighter, which will probably bring it somewhere in between, as Matt mentioned.

thanks for all the great feedback guys. when i painted my helmet i used a green that was right inbetween these two and it looked great so i might stick with that. i just wanted to give the screen accurate paint a try. also i might stick to using the pigment powders rather than black spray for the weathering.
oh and i too noticed that the black is actually a dark green. i did mix the black with some green on these tests, maybe not enough :). ok so it looks like im keeping my methods just the same as when i painted my helmet, here are some pics (just hope i can get the same look on my armour).

Hey Nick, your 100% right about the correct Humbrol green looking a bit blue in the flesh, im far from done (might even start again) but regardless of taking a photo in daylight or with a flash, its blue  having said that though, i clicked the one on the right vote button, being a purist

Mine looks closer to the one on the right. It was based off the Humbrol colors.

Wasn't aware of the dark dark green instead of black though. I'm happy with the look and it's what we used for DZC. I'll post pics this weekend.

I used 3-4 coats of blackwash, letting it sit for 30 secs to 1 min before carefully wiping off.

Then came back w/ powedered graphite. I really like this stuff alot! It smudges well, subdues the brighter colors excellent!

You just have to be really careful how you apply it. A little bit goes a loooooooooooooonnnnnnnnnnnnnnnngggggggggggg way!

It's all too easy to have a huge dark grey splotch that you can barely see any other colors underneath it.

Then you have to get it wet, wipe it off, start allllll over.... :?

Works really well, especially for turning "recent armor scrapes" into "old armor scrapes"... 8)

Thanks mate, i thought the camo pattern was a bit on the small side with too much of the base green (or is it blue :) ) showing, fussy or what

no, to be honest stonedog i really like the amount of blue/green you have in ratio to the other colours. i think its the shape of the camo patterns more than the amount that makes the difference.

oh and i know just how you feel about being fussy. i cant leave anything alone on my aliens prop shelf. always adding and changing bits and bobs (took a giant step and ripped off my helmet cover yesterday, was never 100% happy with the way it looked).

i wont be happy until i have a collection that looks as perfect as Eagles :) :) :)
