It could be worse. At least they're not attempting military drill ;)

Although, if you feel like giving it a whack, I know I'm not the only active duty vet on these boards. I'm sure we could... help... heheh...

All jokes aside though, I think this is a great idea. Even if you've never been to Boot Camp or ROTC, we've all seen enough war movies to at least fake it, and simple things like this can keep the "unit" looking organized and "military," which is super impressive to the passer-by. It's that precise organization and snappy action that makes military drill so impressive to the civvies, after all.

On top of formations for pictures, I think it would be a good idea to set up some sort of standard for patrolling in "fire teams" around the cons or when we do the colony sweep, based on military tactics and the movie itself. Smartgunner in front (if you have one), followed by a marine with a tracker and another behind him watching the rear... post in firing positions in front of doors before opening them, or before going around corners... etc.

And especially, instead of walking around with your rifle in front of your gut when you're "patrolling" which I've seen a bit of on some of the con videos that have been posted, walk with the buttstock against your shoulder and the rifle slanted downwards across your chest, like you're ready to snap to the firing position at a moment's notice. Little details like this can seriously make the difference between someone saying "oh look, a cosplayer in marine armor" and "Holy Shit! The COLONIAL MARINES are here!"

I used to be a NCO in the ACF and did drill.

Came second one year at a summer boot camp.

Yeah, those cooky yanks! :D Making all their drill commands sound odd.
Mind you since we fell into line with the army and abolished "Atten-TION" in favour of just "Shun" it looks like we're heading the same way. :( Sounds bloody silly if you ask me.

I was in the RCAC (cadets) for 7 years and taught drill for 4 years (about a thousand years ago). :wink:


It will be a daunting task to teach civilians the most basic drill moves. My only suggestion is to try and practice before the convention itself. It will be hard to remember even a small amount of drill if it is taught the same day of the parade/event.

Done properly- it looks awesome! However the slightest mistakes will make it look completely laughable (hence the need for practice practice practice).

But I do wish you guys the best of success.

I'm no "Garritrooper" but a front line Marine.
If I have to do drill, I'm hanging up my PR and helmet & joining the 501st! I did 23 years in the Canadian Army and done my time on the parade square. If I want to do drill, I'll join the Reserves and get paid for it. Drill sucks. I WILL entertain tactical formations for the Dcon parade and/or colony sweeps. :arrow: Something easy like "Ack-Ack" (loose formation), arrowhead, single file, and extended line (we are all facing the enemy). These formations are great for the Dcon parade or some kind of "show of force". I'm sure whatever military force you were in before from whatever country you live in or watched on TV/movies, you can figure out these simple formations. As far as tactical movement, the holy bible (The Technical Manual) mentions we are in groups of two as such we should use this as a guideline. As soon as you do the colony sweep, that's when you would search in twos. Read the manual. If you don't have a copy, I can send you a pdf. Just send me a pm It's also very easy to find on bittorrent.

Mike - One of the reasons behind this, I think, is that we in the UK are trying to make sure we don't fall foul of the VCR bill's October stage... And it's been suggested that to be classified as a re-enactment group we need to have at least one short pre-scripted routine that we perform.

( Would we not technically be a pre-enactment group, though? :) )

There is of course a world of difference between "Drill & Ceremonial" and "Fieldcraft & Military Skills".

If you guys want to look "Parade Ready" then drill is the way to go, whereas if you want to look smart and canny "in the field" FMST is what you seek and is far easier to learn.

Are you wanting "battle drills" i.e. tactical movement, different formations, section attacks etc to give the impression of a unit on operation?

Or are you thinking more formal, parade type movements e.g. marching, rifle drill (not spinning, we don't do that over here :P) etc to give the impression of a unit on parade?

Or a combination of both to suit different events?
