Post subject: | question on smart gunner headset weight |
I did my first con with the new headset upgrade for the smart gunner. I discovered that the XLR mic I used requires phantom power to pickup audio. That is easily fixed later. I had weight issues and will need to rethink how to lower weight on how I did things. there was not enough grip on the left piece. I could probably add some sort of counter weight there it just would not be as screen accurate. Harry, what is the weight on the screen used headset? I am trying to figure out how I need to lower things so the weight is more managable. |

That's not an easy question to answer I'm afraid as all my stuff is in storage and has been since way before the Coronavirus pandemic. I wouldn't know how to guess the weight of it either, but I wonder if you're having more issues with balance than you are with weight. The eye-cup on the originals is of course vacuum-formed styrene so there's virtually no weight to it. That could be what's making yours slip (presumably) forwards. That's just a guess though. If you can talk through what your set up is made from that might be helpful. Harry |

Why dont you discreetly attach the headset to a cap or headband like the smartgunners wore in the movie? The headset i made a while back is much heavier one side so i plan to do this when/if i get my smartgun costume completed! |

Well the first time I did not bring paracord with me I could have worked through the issue. On the headset I have a 1.5" NTSC display with driver board and power and video coming out with a neutral 90 degree connector with a custom hydraulic rubber gasket to keep things snug. The camera is a pyle backup camera. I will switch that to a much smaller unit that is much less weight. I have very small pieces of red oak for backer to secure the headset to. No drilling on the headset. The unit is all printed PLA plastic sealed with smothon's xtc-3d resin and a few coats of paint to get color where it needs to be. Left has the boon microphone and almost no weight. I think I can add a block of steel to counter weight which might help. |

OK, looking through things I think I can redistribute the weight using paracord cleverly used and redoing the cord routing as well. And it appears I put on the bottom plate piece backwards but I think some bond and sanding can address that... |

I noticed that you’re not using the HM560 headset which is quite beefy and may be key to giving it better on-noggin stability! Harry |
