Post subject:  question on smartgunner lamp setup

As far as I can tell from the movie it appears that the lamp was mounted on a piece of aluminum plate of some sort that came off of the left should strap on the steadicam vest.

Has anyone figured out a good way to mount their shoulder lamp?

Although Vasquez's lamp was mounted on the metal plate I think Drakes was attached directly to the vest.
I just mounted mine straight to the back shoulder of the steadicam vest with a couple of custom printed plastic clips.

One mounting point being missed here... the long bolt passing through the handle to the vest. It runs perpendicular through the handle and in several shots, appears 2-3 long before attaching to the vest.

Just my two cents on this after some time of comparing multiple photos.
Throughout the movie you see Drake and Vasz lamp (mount) change position and angle.

If you compare the Med Lab scene where the lamp (mounting plate_s_) where further away from the body vs. to the other extreme in the APC (extremely tight to the body) gives a good indication that either a flexible way mechanism was used, or different methods have been used to accomplish this.

I love to see a screen accurate way how to attach the upper mount plate, which is connected with the lamp handle, to the operator’s vest. Keep in mind that its doubtful that the rented steady operator vests have been altered/damaged in order to do this.

I was thinking of maybe doing a sheet of lexan cut down and make something that it can mount to.

The variation in mounting led me to believe that a sheet of metal was used that was adjusted as needed.

The problem with my vest is that I only have straps to mount to which is more or less the same issue that drake/vasquez had on their costumes.

I can run a cover over the shoulder clips and tie to the chest plate, but that creates issues with movement and impact damage concerns.

I am almost thinking some webbing tied into the vest plate via buckles and secured to an aluminum plate would work as it can be adjusted as needed and will have sufficient rigidity to allow for some medium of abuse but also allow for a one size fits all setup.

The other thing is that I want to ensure that spats kit will be still an available option as his slot fit setup is very do it yourself friendly.

The most important thing for screen accuracy is that it should be pointing at the floor 90% of the time and across the body. It must NEVER point as you are facing at an angle that would make it useful in any way whatsoever

While designing this setup the company never thought of Drake, Vasz or other Operators.

Good for us as this effect can easily be reproduced.

I may need to get some sheets of abs to play with.

My vest uses Velcro straps but I would have to figure out how to secure things. I could use webbing to secure things. I use the vest as an actual Steadicam vest on occasions. I do want to try and make it to where spats mounting kit would be compatible.

Chef`s approach has his advantages for Cons.
One of the "better" photos of the rod from the plate to the lamp handle.
It also gives a good size comparison of the intriuder alarm box vs. the mount plate.
