The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Downloaded a very surprisingly good STL file for a 3D printed Alien flamethrower from Thingiverse. https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:3592028
I changed a fair bit to metal and real world parts. but 90% is still 3d printed PLA+
didn't take any progress pictures as i normally do. But here is the finished product and a few of the screen used prop.

darn you, another thing I will need to farm out and buy...

Awesome prop and I can see you put some love into finishing it properly.

Great job!

I know next to nothing about 3D printing in commercial terms. Does anyone know how much it would cost to have one of these printed?

Harry, if you have the files, you can go to sites such as https://treatstock.com and get quotes.

Bear in mind bigger files will need to be sliced. Larger file sizes (bigger than 8 inches) make for steeper costs. This is due to the fact that large format printers which are beyond 500mmx500mmx500mm (Creality's CR-10 is this size print area) are commercial/industrial grade and used to prototype expensive parts so larger than that size and you will pay a high premium. The easiest way is to do it with autocad's Meshmixer. I am still learning how to use that software but it seems to have the smallest amount of cpu load and memory usage.

As far as finishing. https://smoothon.com has a product called XTC-3D which is a low tack thin setting resin specifically made for PLA and other 3d-printed materials to remove lines and smooth things on. Other folks use straight resin, bonds or other products to seal it.

Typically to piece together the pieces you use superglue. satellite city's two part product has worked well for me.

Once sealed and assembled finishing is just like any resin or other prop material.

The PLA printing material is a corn based product and it has to be sealed once finished otherwise it comes apart. ABS is a better material but it is very difficult to get the right controlled environment to get consistant prints and is a more expensive material to use.

Larger pieces can take many hours to print sometimes days if not a week or more.

The other factor is infill or how much material thickness exists inside the item at a given point. More infill equals more material consumption and a longer print, less infill means less time but more weakness. Full infill can make an item as heavy as a resin prop.

Another trick for rigidity is to pause printing and insert steel rods for strengthening.

There are also other materials you can use such as carbon fiber, titanium, and steel but the process, methods used, and costs are substantially increased plus the metallic printers start at 100k plus versus 800 for the creality CR-10 (a higher end 3-d printer with a huge print bed area.

Thanks. It looks like it's possibly affordable, just - but PLA as you mentioned is the cheapest.

What worries me is this:

Is that right?! I'm hoping that was a typo! Also I've heard that PLA isn't good to work with at all.

I've printed a lot with PLA - M56, M41A, hand welder, custom shelving for my wife's craft boxes, shoretrooper helmet parts, C3PO's head! PLA is pretty strong (depending on the object) and very easy to work with.

That is why you seal it. Once it is sealed you are typically fine.

And PLA is plenty strong when you have a properly designed in fill.

The product will outlast craft foam for a very long time.

Ive never had an issue with PLA, but it will deform under high heat for an extended period of time.
If anybody wants to check out some PLA I can print something small and send it to you to mess with.
I print it at 200 degrees and have solid layer bond, 20% infill. Ive had amazon basics PLA snap easily but nicer brands like cctree PLA+ have additives that increase durability. I would choose it over resin when it comes to intricate or moving parts. its less brittle then resin. PETG is a more durable option and prints at lower heats then ABS with fewer layer bond issues and failed prints in my experience. Id go with PETG for a piece as time consuming as this but Id bet money that PLA would still have great results.

As far as material costs go. This is what it cost me. give or take the AUS to UK pound conversion
PLA+ its about 40 pounds worth max
glues 15 pound
paints 50 pounds
screws nuts bolts and fixings about 10 pounds
sandpaper and fillers 10 pounds
Id print all the small greeblies on my resin printer now. just to save on sanding and finer detail.
Theres a few things id do different but overall its just a good detailed fun model.

Thanks Trigger Happy. I take it you printed this yourself on a printer that you already own, is that right?

Thats correct. It was all printed on my small printer 200mm cubed in print size.
I now own a resin printer and a lot larger FDM printer. That would have saved a heap of time and made it more detailed.
Im sure somebody there in the UK can print this for you. The hard bit is all the filling sanding and painting. The printing is a simple as putting in the SD card and hitting print.

You can anneal PLA. I have not tried it cause all I have is the oven in my kitchen.
https://rigid.ink/blogs/news/how-to-anneal-your-3d-prints-for-strength
I have also seen people doing it in hot water. I might try this. There a bunch of YouTube videos. Plan to start this flamer this weekend.

Thanks!

I have about 35% of it printed out. What spark plug did you use? I looked at the PropSummit thread but never could tell.

Thanks!

Not sure the brand or part number of the spark plug off the top of my head.
I had a big pile of spark plugs and picked one that matched best. You could print out the original spark plug from the STL file and then go to an auto shop and get something the same. If you like I can look for a part number on mine. But theres nothing saying mine is correct. I just used what i had and looked good

I found a spark plug. I tried AutoZone but the guy looked at me like I had 2 heads. I have everything printed and assembled but the little greeblies.

My printer will not print the STL. I have tried everything. I might go old school and just make something very similar. Weather here is crap right now so I cannot paint. Tanks are done but not weathered. Red one is painted yellow under the red so I have to scratch/scuff it up.

So I was able to modify the STL to print the greeblies. I got them all attached and the weather was sunny today so I got to prime the print. It looks better not being 3 different filament colors.

I will start to paint white tomorrow. Debating if I am going to smooth out with XTC-3D. I like the rough look in areas as this was cobbled together. More update soon.

Thanks!
