Does anyone know if J.W. Rinzler has consulted anyone from this forum about "The making of Aliens"?
I assume he must have stumbled across this place while researching but I never saw or heard any evidence of that.
Kinda worried that for $47 dollars that book is just gonna be a nice shelf display and we wont find any new photos or information. Like many of us, I'm starving for more information about the production. Getting to the point where Im trying to identify the length of certain screws and battery types used in props ect. Bottom of the barrel type stuff. I've had to seek out people and basically cold call them to get certain information. There are questions we have that will never be answered because people are unreachable or just don't remember. but there are people here and elsewhere that still posses some knowledge that the rest of us don't have. Hopefully this book surprises us. Here are some links, and hopefully someone can tell me that there's gonna be something new in there. Everything that gets made based on Aliens lately has some glaring inaccuracy, all they'd have had to do is come to Legacy and ask anyone about it first.

Judging by Jon Rinzler's previous 'Making Of' books I'd say it'll be a really great read so I'd recommend you grab a copy.

In terms of new behind the scenes content, to be honest there's not much more out there other than what might be in private hands. When we were looking for archived content at Fox for the Quadrilogy and Anthology sets it was pretty much all stuff that had already been seen and that was a few years ago now.

Honestly, it's not so much about the making of pictures or etc with Making of Alien. There's a lot of specific details in there regarding shooting order, who is in the Alien suit for a given scene, etc. The kind of things that aren't talked about too much in the other docos. His Making of Alien is simply fantastic. If he brings the same level of detail into Aliens, it's going to be very much worth it.

He did (a few of us worked on it), and yes, it's amazing.

This just showed up at my door! Lots of cool looking stuff in there including storyboards and BTS photos that were either new to me or presented at a higher resolution than I had seen previously. I have only just opened it though, so I can't say how in depth it goes. I am happy to have it though!

Got mine yesterday. It's great so far.

I adore his Star Wars books. He dives into the material and the production in a way that is utterly riveting. It makes for a great narrative. THe creative discoveries and the production problems all make for wonderful drama in his writing. Almost novel like in a way.

Can't wait to see this treatment on a big Cameron project.

On some of the behind the scenes photos of the making if the Alien Queen the faces of the crew have been digitally blurred. I wonder if there was an issue with permission not being obtained or something? I haven't seen this in other books.

Are there any never before seen shots of marine armor or actors on set?

I'm going to say probably not, but there may be some that are new to you depending on what you've seen before of course. I don't think there are many images out there nowadays that haven't been seen unless they're in private hands and haven't come to light yet. However I'd strongly advise anyone to get this book - it's so well written; for those of you who don't follow me (well, the HHACA) on social media here's my micro-review that I posted today:

Quote:
My copy of 'The Making of Aliens' by J.W. Rinzler arrived today.

This book is probably the next best thing to being at Pinewood Studios during the making of Aliens. Rinzler pulls you in to the world of racing against time and budget, hiring and firing, interdepartmental politics and culture clashes to ultimately produce one of the best Science Fiction action movies ever made.

Put your coat on, grab a cup of tea and a cheese roll from the trolley, turn the heating way down and start reading!

Because I helped out on the book a tiny bit I was lucky enough to read an advanced copy and it really is a great journey through the making of the film. I'm not a huge book fan but this one kept me engaged with it all the way through, so much so that it's a must-have for any true Aliens fan.

Gonna be a while before I have the extra cash but I was always gonna buy it right from the beginning. If nothing else then for the appreciation that new Aliens stuff is still being discovered and released. REALLY pumped that its actually such an excellent book, relieved even. cause theyre getting my money either way.

The fact that it takes you day by day through the production offers huge insights into how the film was made. The stuff in Hadley's Hope with Lydecker and the colonists was DAY ONE. That somehow blew my mind, even though shooting a "clean" set first (and then distressing it) makes total sense.
Sure, I wish there was more of a facus on the graphic design, props, and costume work, but the book is still a massive gift to fans.

Me too but from a publishing point of view it makes sense to cater to the general readership rather than us nerds LOL!

I remember years ago I was working on a West End show and we had a camera crew in filming us for a 'Making Of'. When it came out it was just interviews with the cast and producers because that's what the majority want to see. I think there was literally two or three seconds of someone welding the set, and that was it!

To your point Harry, I used to work in production and sometimes bring a fan backstage. Theyd walk right past the guitar racks and want the water bottle that the talent had drank out of.
