Ive been wanting to know more about this story. cool article. The Pinewood crew was an abrupt change from the young, eager, non-union film crews Cameron and Hurd had labored with at New World Pictures and on The Terminator. “Gale and I were shocked to be working with people who simply couldn’t care less about the film they were working on,” says Cameron. “The Pinewood crew were lazy, insolent and arrogant. This is probably among one of the more famous preproduction stories on Aliens. Honestly issues like this are what make movies great. Internal strife and rising above it, despite it to get a finished product ensures films for the ages. Predator had its own issues. Invasions of venomous snakes and scorpions on the set. Water purification issues causing dysentary. A HUGE SNAFU on the costume just to bring in Stan Winston and crew. Even on Alien there was some strife over the level of detail H.R. Geiger was going into on the sets. ALL great talking points of discussion. |

I admire that he got everyone together, laid it all out for them and heard them out. I used to be a stagehand for 7 years or so, worked with all kinds of famous people. After cross country move I encountered a completely different stage culture. the new environment felt less competent then a high school theater department. Ive always wanted to know more info about this story, because of how annoyed I was with that. Ive seen people totally explode over dead batteries. Ive seen people go 15 hours without a bite of food. I cant imagine people just walking off without a word, Cameron reacted like a godamn puppy dog compared to the shit I have seen go down. |

I think part of it had to do with the fact that there was great artisanal work, he just had a couple of issues with the culture. The other deal was he had the money and they were not used to having a boss with final say and they did not believe his threats. He also knew that he had once chance to go at it and if it failed he was done. 80s/70s had a different work ethic than now. The road and support crews are a different creature today then they were back then. |

I have the bluray 4 pack and ive watched the commentary, but i wonder if there is a different one somewhere. The one I saw seemd like people were trying to hint at stuff but staying profesional. Nobody wants to be known for bad mouthing. Im imaginning it was a total shitshow, and that it would be awesome to hear someone totally go off about it with a couple drinks in em. |

It's the best ive heard so far.There are voice actors and there is a rendition I guess you could say of James Camerons speech to the crew, I don't know how accurate it is. I do wonder if this was pieced together from the same sources that all of us have already looked into, I'm not sure. Very entertaining though. My personal obsession with this film is as much about the production as it is the story. Piecing together the details is like trying to remember a dream. Like your favorite actor showed up to the party but you were passed out on the couch and now you've gotta listen to everyone tell you about it. I can understand the perspective of James and of the crew, although I think James was right in this case. We probably all have brushed elbows with at least one person who was involved with this film in some small way, hopefully we can keep gathering details to obsess about.
