| Post subject: | Crafting Drake's Necklace |
Despite not being able to dive into making a Drake costume at the moment, I thought about it while walking around a Halloween store yesterday, namely the bone necklace (I know there's other things like the bell and scales, but the bones are a necessity). I haven't seen a lot of Drake costumes, or ones with the bones, so I'm curious about what the best material would be to make it. I'm not 100% sure about using real chicken or turkey bones, not only because I don't know how to preserve them, but because people might be a little weirded out if I say, "These are real bones" at conventions. Using bones from a Halloween store might be a bit iffy. They look fake (if anyone has tips on making them look more real, that'd be welcomed), and they don't look like chicken/small animal bones. However, there are a ton of animal and bird skeletons from the Boneyard that I find in craft stores every year, and taking them apart might be a challenge. Any advice and opinions on this would be awesome. |

It is all about the treatment and coatings you give the bones that determine the appearance of things. The other option is to contact a local taxidermist and get them engaged, but you are looking at some money going that route. Most go with resin cast units or plastic Halloween type deals. If you go with actual bone, drilling it and preserving it are going to be the biggies. You will need to seal the bones if they are real as they are porous and prone to collecting bacteria to an extent. |

I used to have crossed turkey bones on the front of my helmet for Airsoft... Til some lucky bastard scored a direct hit on them! I just baked them, soaked them in bleach, then sun-dried them to sterilise. They were fine! |

Don't use bleach, use peroxide. Bleach will weaken the bone and make it more brittle than usual. |

Haven't made any progress on a necklace, but a friend of mine managed to order a hat, and is planning on including the "This End Up" on it for me. Should we stick with the marker likely used in the film, or use glue/stitching? |

you could use Sculpy 3 clay, shape the bones, bake them in the oven then hit em with a wash. |
