Another effective title might be "smartguns for wimps," because that's pretty much why I'm asking what is the best lightweight material to build a Drake smartgun with. What is easiest to carry around at a con for more than, say, two hours?

3D printing and hollowing out as much of the receiver as possible is going to be your best bet. I still don't have the final numbers on my printed M56 but I expect to use around 2 kg of filament. The front section (minus any tubing and fasteners) is coming up at around 900g
A word of warning about smartgun files that are out there, some of them don't resemble a smartgun even from a distance

Reinforcing of a print this long is necessary, yeah. Wooden dowels, PVC or aluminium tubing are just some of the options, and it opens up the possibility of taking the gun apart for transport. Since I'm printing right now, my only fear is that the gun ends up being too light for the steadicam arm I have, even with the springs tuned all the way to the lowest load.

there was a lady who had a foam smartgun at dragoncon this year. Was really impressed with the build and the weight. Gotta see if i can find her build info.

20+ years ago there was a company in the UK that built prop replicas out of wood, I happen to have a smartgun they made. It's fairly lightweight, but I'm not sure exactly how much it weighs.

I made all of my 3D files, so I already accounted for the reinforcing tube/dowel and made a hole that goes through the entire receiver along the barrel axis. It could be done on existing STLs, but it can be a challenging job (depending on the quality of those files)

I know Stimpy on here made a scaled down Smartgun for his son out of PVC pipe and foam.
