Hi all, I've been watching this series of videos featuring Terry English and I thought some of you might enjoy them. It's not specific to Aliens as he is building King Arthur armour alongside Adam Savage but he does mention the cm armour from time to time and his process is fascinating. I'm really enjoying the series which is in 5 parts so far. Terry seems like an absolute sound chap. cheers https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vib1-V8ArzM |

really good to know. I saw him once at a sci-fi event at the space centre in Leicester but didn't speak to him. At the time I didn't really know too much about the movie so didn't recognise his contribution. were you there too Harry? |

Great little interview there. Definitely some 'fun facts' that may not necessarily be common knowledge to everyone. For the impatient crowd that doesn't want to sit through it, some of the highlights were: -Fiberglass prototypes came FIRST w/o Terry's involvement. Upon being extremely dissatisfied with the look and feel, Cameron contacted Terry to come in and improve everything. -24 sets of armor were made in just 3 weeks. -The very first prototype suit he ever made is still in his possession. He states he displayed in his restaurant and converted it to the "Hicks" style. -Terry did most of the customizing himself (paint, etc). Personally I had always heard claims of production made fiberglass armor and assumed it was just people trying to scam copies for sale or something. When I heard about them, it didn't make sense. This reminded me of a related (and disputed) story that makes everything kind of fall into place. Bill Paxton has said in an interview that, prior to filming, Cameron had him get all dressed up and told him to run into a wall. Paxton stated that when he did, pieces of his armor went flying everywhere and Cameron said the armor "wasn't ready" and sent Terry back to the drawing board. I have since heard that Terry had disputed that story saying he was never told his work wasn't good enough by Cameron. Now the pieces fall into place! Paxton was probably wearing the fiberglass stuff at the time for that first go-round. After the failure of the fiberglass, Cameron surely sent Terry to the drawing board to improve it. The other thing that I thought cleared up some questions was the 24 sets. It is often repeated that each actor had 3 sets, yet we have photo evidence that some (namely Hicks and Hudson) may have had as many as 5 each. With 7 armored marines and photo evidence of repainting some parts (like the Ski set painted over a hicks) it becomes clear how there was plenty wiggle room in the oft-repeated "3 each" story. The stars could easily have had 5. There were plenty to go around. Sure wish it was possible to attend an event with Terry at it. Jealous of those that actually get to have conversations with him and very jealous of missing out on 'tipsy' stories! |

I was very lucky to spend the day at Terry's several years ago. Got the grand tour of the house/work shop and went out to the pub with Terry to eat/drink later that night. It was one of the best days of my life. Terry was a tremendous host showing me how he made/makes the CM armour. I own a set of Terry's armour that he made for me and will never part with it. I cannot say enough good things about him. Hope to see him again soon. Attachment: Thanks! Greg |
