The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

This photo is from the Prometheus bluray extras, and are of two towers on the Pinewood Studios lot during production.
Anyone recognize them from somewhere else...? :-)

Graham I have this in my files. It's in a folder taken at Pinewood by Pat McClung in either 1985 or 1986. They look the same to me, albeit with the modern addition of cellphone antenna etc.

Ha, well you get half a gold star because the answer I was looking for is in the below photos - maybe it's common knowledge for some, I don't know. I've not seen it before.
What are these towers for, anyway? Were they built for a set (maybe Aliens or something else) or are they actual water towers or something?

Woah
I had no idea these two towers exist in the real world as well!

Also there seem to be at least 2 miniatures of differend scale.

Cheers,
Stefan

I think I read or heard somewhere (most likely on the Alien Anthology DVD Extras) that Jim Cameron really liked the look of the Pinewood Towers which might explain why they're used for the Colony sets.

Could they be water tanks?

Yes that's very probably what they are.

Funny thing is that they are located right at the entrance to Pinewood Studios as you go in through the front gate. Never knew I would get so excited on seeing a water tank lol!

Wait, so....these tanks that were on the outside on the studio lot were so interesting that Cameron reconstructed them and put them in the movie set? And therefore part of the miniature set as well?

The movie set for the colony exterior was built inside, right?

The towers were never recreated full size...just for the two miniatures (I think there were only two, Harry or Melissa may know for definite). One pair for the miniature which was used for the drop ship fly-by and another pair for the 1/6 miniature, which was used for when Apone looks at the colony through binoculars and the APC drive to South Lock. This pair might have also been used for the drop ship hovering around the landing grid scenes though again Harry and Melissa may know more.
