The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Hmm nice .... :)

During the movie the Sentry Guns were painted BB. Later on (Alien War) the remaining one was repainted OD. I've seen pictures of it's current state where you can still see small areas of BB below the OD.
Also the markings on the gun (as it is now) are not the original ones you see in the movie. So it's best to check screenshots for this.
That being said the barrel shroud on the surviving sentry is a replica that shows a few differences (like the position of the cutout on the top) to the original one. From what is visible from the "sentry in a box" screenshots (thanks Moosh!), I actually believe that the bottom of the cutout is slotted to help in cooling the barrel (the MG42 is air cooled - so without air flow it will overheat quite fast).

Cheers,
Stefan

Wow thanks for that Information,do you happen to have any usable Photos of the screen used barrel shroud as all the Photos i have are from Poor quality so you can't realy see any Details,I would be verry gratefull for any help at all.

I've just looked at that photo of it in the storage Box,i have the same photo but i never noticed the slots in the barrel shraud before thanks Once again.

I'd love to!
However, the only behind the scene photos I know of are the two Willie posted some time ago.
Otherwise there are only screenshots to work from.
It's strange that there are almost no pictures/documentation about the sentry guns. OK, they were cut from the original release, but given the amount of work that went into these (they were hydraulically actuated!), I would expect more that just two photos to exist!

Cheers,
Stefan

Ok thank you anyway.
It is verry strange that there are basicaly no detailed Photos at all of the sentry allthough it is or was a masterpiece in my eyes.

This just came up today on Facebook. I don't think the sight unit had been identified until now, is that right?

I'm pretty sure that this is it. The eye cup has been removed on the ones used in the film.

Brown Bess and If folks have issues get some blue lights like they got in the movie to show that it looks like Olive Drab under that kind of lighting.

Do you have any measurements recorded that you used or did you just eyeball things and got it close?

Given that servos are getting better, more powerful, more efficient, and programming options are getting ever wider, Standardizing on the build on this awesome prop may help others in the community. I have a NECA sentry gun that I have micrometered out and can multiply out on.

Just longer term I think as a group if we get a reference sheet for DIY on how big to cut pieces and any pit falls on particular corners that need extra reinforcement. Some folks actually get their first steps in metal or wood working making props like this and making things easier for them will get more folks interested in trying the craft.

I could not find one in the searching that I did. Apparently the unit was an extremely specialized unit. Most likely any units not in museums or personal collections are in landfills now. These units predate modern computing standards as we are used to.

Additionally, I found this really cool video of one starting up. I commented and asked for a video of it running but the owner doesn't have the air tank to cool it to run :(
