Post subject:  Starting a Drop Ship Helmet

Today after more than a year of owning a SPH-4 helmet. I got up the courage to cut the holes in it for the side gribblies. I’m looking forward to fiberglassing in a base on each ear hole to mount the ear gribblies. I’ll try and post my progress in the coming weeks. I’m going to try and have it ready for Indiana Comic Con on March 30- April 1.

Laying up the fiber glass. This is new to me, so I’m getting instructions from a friend of mine at work. He’s actually letting me do it! Just giving me tips.

This morning I’m trying to fill and blend this part. Fiberglass laid in, waiting for it to cure to see how I did.

While waiting for fiberglass to cure, I hollowed out a spot for a small speaker in one of the ear gribblies. In one of the photos I’ve been using as reference, I thought I saw this done. Right now I don’t have any plans to make the speaker work but I thought it was a nice added detail. The speaker came from one of those greeting cards that play music. I salvaged the electronics long before I knew what I would use it for! lol

I ain’t got time to bleed!! I got my 2x56 pan head screws today, so I drilled out the ear pieces and was trimming the cast screw heads off when my xacto knife slipped! I hate when that happens, now I have to stop and get a bandaid and work with one on my finger! Grrr!!

Got to a point where I can test fit the ear pieces and cable covers on the helmet.

Pretty sure blood is a necessary ingredient in this build. I cut my fingers up trimming the visor knob on mine.

This is looking great by b the way. What are you planning to use for the HAMA cables?

Crazy glue that cut! :)

Is there a template for the cut-out on the helmet? That would be the scariest part.

I've always wanted an SPH-4, just cause flight helmets are cool. Every time I see a build like this
I keep wondering where I'm gonna find a decent helmet (in a SMALL, no less) for a good price.

Would be cool to build one.

I found these on eBay. I searched vintage camera shutter release. Trying to find two that looked the same and similar in look to the Hama’s. They aren’t the Hama cables. I gave up looking for the real deal. They didn’t have a name brand but they have that braided look I was looking for but no clear heat shrink over them. They cost about $10 each. They are also about 20” long. I only need about 9” because of where I placed the little plastic pieces they go to. I just searched Amazon for clear 1/4” heat shrink. It should be here on Tuesday.

It’s funny you said that! I did get the super glue and after washing my finger, I glued it closed and it worked great. I didn’t want to stop what I was doing but I was bleeding all over the parts!
Yes, as far as templates. I got a PDF file from Noble. They worked perfectly. I cut the holes slowly with a Dremel. Opened them up smaller than the template tracing then continued to test fit the ear pieces and grind the holes bigger until they fit.
It was a little nerve racking but I felt great when I got them cut out!
I found my helmet on eBay, I had to watch for an extra large, one in decent shape and didn’t cost a fortune!

That's a great looking helmet so far! I ended up using braided shoe strings for my cables. Coated them with silver rub n' buff.

Post subject:  Re: Starting a Drop Ship Helmet

I spent about 4 or 5 hours trying to figure a good installation for the camera shutter release cables and the little greeblie that holds the cables together. I used a mic boom from an old headset. Heated it up, removed the ball and bent the wire while it was red hot! I was going to go for the more acurrate greeblie but I liked how the microphone was installed and after removing it, I was left with a cool attaching screw and the little cone shaped pieces that went into the mic. I don’t know, I like what I came up with. I had to use 5 minute epoxy to get it all back together. I tried to solder and braze it together but none of it worked and I don’t have a welder. I like how everything looks. It’s different. :)
