Thanks, bigbisont!

Glued the spooge tubes on. I ended up making wedges to mount them to because they sagged a bit more than I liked. This helped to level them.

Quick painted.

Tested using a belt to support his tail. Worked well enough. Now to fashion some sort of mount.

Paint!

First coat was just watered down latex.

Image

Then tonight just laid down the black latex paint all over.

I couldn't help to try and start highlighting. Mixed white with a dash of blue (acrylic) and mostly dry brushed and smudged with my fingers. Still in progress ...

Kinda exciting! :)

Thanks guys! Can't wait to see him wear the complete set up.

Little bits.

Hands. Paint still wet. It bothers me that they're on the wrong sides for the pic. :P

Image

Here's what I've got for the feet so far. LOL! I'm not too worried about making these super accurate since they will get absolutely wrecked when he wears them out. But my plan is to cut and heat mold strips to form the feet shape, then add the claws and some of the plastic loom for the ribbed texture.

Feet. lolz.

Foam strips. I call this the chicken tender method.

Image

Minutes after I uploaded these pics, someone "faved" this one. Curious.

Image

Wet paint.

Image

Come on. It's gonna be dark. They'll be worried about candy. And people are just gonna be staring at his head anyway. Right?!

Finished his neck veil. There was a gap at the back so I extended the fabric and sewed in some velcro for closure. I think I'll secure the magnets so I don't have to futz with them when he's walking around.

Got a lot done today!

I wanted to add the chin tube so back to the pink foam to add it to the back of the jaw. Just barely had enough poly-loom (plastic conduit) to do both sides. :)

Image

Image

Grafted in and some foam filler to cover up the gap. I also filled in some hole on the jaw and cleaned up the area between the chin and the bottom teeth.

Image

Once that was all dry, I painted over the pink and went to work on the jimmy hat tendons!

The thin rubber is super clingy to itself (think rubbery plastic wrap). So I painstakingly got it separated as best I could and took thin EVA strips and CA glued it down.

Image

Image

Image

So now you can mount the foam instead of trying to glue down the annoying latex. I cut them into thinner strips as needed like so ...

Image

Then I cut a little channel in the head where the mounting point goes, top and bottom. Hot glued the foam in. I tried both ways, foam side in or latex side in, both worked fine.

Image

Image

Bottom mounting.

Image

Boom!

After painting over!

I'll go back and fix the bluish highlight paint.

Just need to make the rear spikey thing at the top of the back. Fab up the tail mount. Then add the leg details. Highlight paint everything and we're good to go!

Almost there ...

Oh hai ...

He's complaining about his feet hurting. Where? On the bottom of his heel. Where his Croc is. His favorite Crocs. That he wears and runs and plays in everyday. There's nothing modified there or added. Just his feet in his Croc. Oh brother. : /

Looks like your child is really enjoying the costume. I hope to see you at the June Fan Boy or the April Marble City Comic Con.

Wish we could make it to Knoxville, knoxville, but it's unlikely. One day!

Alright it's 12:30 am and his suit is as ready as it's gonna be. Not 100% done, but hey, it's done enough. The blue highlights are a bit brighter in the pics, just FYI.

Didn't get to add the forearm blades, though that would've been the part that got broken on him the easiest, so maybe for the better.

I may squeeze in a tiny bit of piping detail between the bottom of the ribs and his crotch to make it seem continuous but doubt I'll have time tomorrow.

Oh, damn! Need to paint his toe nails.

I'm going to bed.

I'll try and get some fully suited pics. (Just a warning, there's a 40% chance of rain and a 35% chance he turtles and refuses to wear it in front of everybody. We'll see ... )

Thanks everyone! All of you who have commented, thank you! It always gives builds some added boost. :)

We had a blast tonight! It was sketchy at first, didn't look like he was gonna wear it but he turned a corner and did great the whole night. He opted for his black shoes instead of the alien feet, and later when it got dark enough he took the veil off. The claws made it about half way through. He eventually wanted to start grabbing at his candy. Some of the trim on the legs came loose, but that's about it. Everything else held up strong.

He jogged from house to house. It was hilarious to see. The neighbors loved it. He was asked to get pictures several times and he eventually started hamming it up.

Man, what absolute fun. Pics are hazy and dark. Was overcast and drizzly (which added some gloss to the suit, awesome). The paint job looked great in the half-light, just like the movies I guess. I did manage to get a few pics with the DSLR, but I'll touch some stuff up first then retake some pics in better light.

Ha! That is absolutely brilliant!

Did many people recognize the Alien?

Post subject:  Re: Mini alien warrior build

Several did, but compared to how many houses we hit, it seemed odd more people didn't.

But the houses with fans freaked out. Lots of requests for pictures. Some of my favorite reactions:

"OH MY GOD! You actually scared me!"

"Oh wow! A dinosaur!"

"Can you actually see?!"

"Whoa. You get extra candy!"

Lots of great feedback the rest of the night.
