Post subject:  Dropship pilot costumes of Ferro and Spunkmeyer

Hi.
Some days ago I started my own project for me and my wife - both pilots of dropship.
I use for my project two polish helicopter helmets THL-5c which are perfect copy of SPH-4 (during Vietnam war SPH-4 helmet was copied 1:1 in Poland, also jetfighter helmets for Sabre was copied for early Mig 21 pilots).

Here is link to comparing both helmets. It is in polish, but pictures say everything :)

http://odwaszegofotokorespondenta.blogs ... biaej.html

Of course it need some modifications, new microphone, etc. But it is cheaper in compare to SPH-4. I must do 2 helmets, so costs of helmets is very important :).

All topics on forum about dropship helmets are old enough to have broken links to important pictures, drawings, pdf's with measurements, so I started to prepare my own technical drawings for futher works. I want to make all missed parts of ear panels, etc. by myself. Models and props making from scratch is what I love :D, so creating Ferro and Spunkmeyer costumes is a nice challenge for me.

My first drawing of left earpanel.

Interesting, I am now wondering if that'd be a cheaper route for helmets in the UK.

My new toys :D :

Flightsuit MK14A. I know that it is not MK11 but older model is very difficult to buy. I must consider to make some modifications to get as similar as possible to original one. I put on flightsuit my patches as samples :D :D

Harness of MIG15 pilot. I want to make some variation for Ferro costume for my wife

Sweet! Where'd you source the Polish helmets from? Poland? :)

Yes, I live in Poland. I've got these helmets from Allegro (it is polish online marketplace, like ebay)

Ahhhh man! I had such fun on that Dropship helmet thread. :D

How we managed to identify so many original parts is a miracle.
Taking apart my Polaroid to locate the parts in there was easy by comparison to whoever found the random little bits from those rare Japanese robot model kits!

I'll have to dig back through the old thread to see what images are now missing. I may well haves archived some of them for my own future builds.

During other works I started also new project - HK VP70 pistol. After many hours of developing my own drawings, I start building replica. The step that always impresses me: laser cutting and engraving of parts for further works.

Merr-Sonn, what parts are needed from the Polaroid camera for the Spunkmeyer helmet?

Septic. I know. " It's too sexy for my pilot.... " but I'll do It :D

Retrogarde. I think that it is the long black part on right side of white wheel on the bottom of the photo:

Also square lens and it's frame (above circle lens).

WDI. There are a lot of photos missing in archived thread of pilot helmet. Some of them include measurements, I need them very much. I want to prepare drawings and make prototype for molds of systems of Spunkmeyer helmet. That will be sexy :D :D

That's in addition to the other parts from the polaroid common to both helmets of course...

Wait, what? I have the greeblies from Stephen210 so maybe I just didn't realize the origins of some of the original parts, and with the thread gutted I can't easily research it. :(

Yes. For example - Main part of right earpanel is made of the internal lightbox of camera (the largest black part on the right side of photo)

I seem to recall...maybe over on the RPF, there was a whole thread dedicated to listing all the parts of the helmet greeblies and where they came from?

Not sure if this is the one you meant, but this one has some great images in it (especially page 3). I referenced this one quite a bit when I was building my own even though I used very few 'real' parts.

That thread has some great info! Man, how did folks ever ID some of these parts?

Author:  Dropshipbob [ Thu Jan 11, 2018 4:29 pm ]

Bigbisont, yeah, I think that's the one.

And to think, years ago (late 80's) I took apart a Polaroid camera that had some of the parts used on the helmet. I think I even remember seeing some photos of the helmet and thinking to myself that some of the parts I had looked like they were used on the helmet!
