Was wondering if anyone has ever produced these. I am currently working on a project that an item such as this would help to complete a wonderful presentation piece.

It's just an idea that I thought would be better tested on the A.L. first. Certainly, one of you gents have already knocked these out. :D

Do you mean the com card used by Carter Burker or the CAC card used by AL member?
The comm card of Burke is not made/sold on a regular basis, but I know a person in Germany that could make cards like this on demand.

I think Tommin is referring to a comment from the prop maker Terry. On the DVD's there's a reference to cards the Marines would use to access the lockers (and how the prop's lights were rigged to blink or something when the cards were inserted). This detail isn't ever shown on screen and honestly I'm at a loss to where the Marines would keep them when they've just gotten out of cryo and only have their skivvies on! It would almost make more sense if their dogtags accessed it, but it isn't the right shape.

So ignoring the argument above, I think shapewise the "front loading logic card" Burke leaves with Ripley might me the way to go. Like the Marine's tags it is clear plastic, and it could also be used to access the "VidCom" stations we see in the Sulcao's hangar bay.

Can't imagine it would be any different to the standard military ID's the troops have these days

Please forgive my ignorance on the CAC card as I have been out of the loop, so to speak, on the latest of ALIENS related greatness. Familiar with the Carter Burke card though. Would be nice to see what is already out there before even considering taking a shot at something like this myself.

Agreed, but in theoretical application, it is a keyless entry panel with a keyed master. The marines could key code in to gain access to their gear once out of cryo-sleep. After an excursion, or even in the event of injury or death, a partner could access their locker with the key card that they have stored within their BDU's. This would be so that the patient or family of the deceased could retrieve any personal items or photographs. The XO could also perform random locker searchers with a master key card without knowing personal combination settings.

With CAC card I was refering to this:

Very good points. The keypad solves the "fresh out of cryo" argument, while a key card would allow for universal access.

What size were you imagining Tommin? We also have Dallas' "key" from Alien (and Amanda's in Isolation) that could be a useful guide.

Just a thought...instead of a magnetic strip, how about some sort of holographic foil?

there is talk of making member ID cards similar to what you get when you are in the 501st.

Gwen made these IDs in the past.
I have both USCM and UKCM versions and they are great. Other version have also been made.
I see you found the topic on this Tom.
Perhaps if Gwen is no longer making them Melissa/Moosh could step in.

I feel like the basic shape and material of the Burke card would be best, but with the USCM delta and information like the dog tags. It is tricky to not end up exceeding the minimalist style of Aliens honestly, so I'd argue the less cluttered the better (like Mantroon said).

You've got a third for the "minimalist" design. I'm thinking etched acrylic with as mentioned before by retrogarde the USCM delta and other information.

Just a thought, what if there was a rasterized likeness of the actor on the card via laser cutter?

Might be too small though...

Post subject:  Re: USCM Id Key Cards.

Sure.

Could also be a little larger than the burke card, but have the same shape.

Burke's was more business card than ID.

Would the rasterized image look like the one of Hicks in Alien3?

"Would the rasterized image look like the one of Hicks in Alien3?"

Here's an example I found on the net:

(the little bubbling areas are misc residue that wipes off)

Looking good Troon!

If you laser cut the card, and raster the image, how about the type? Probably screen print like Burke's...

Now, THAT's what I'm talking about. Absolutely gorgeous. :D

The example key card shown in the beginning is an electronic pool access key card. It's kind of like a typical hotel room key. So the dimensions are very similar to a standard credit card, only a little thicker.

The other shape worth considering is a floppy disk. The slot on the locker widget is clearly a diskdrive afterall.

Agreed. The slot does appear to be a loading port for some sort of disc drive. Currently, it is just highly doubtful that it was for the 3.5" floppy. Given the two possible dimensions for the key cards, I would imagine that the electronic pool access key would be much more sleek and durable. It has no moving parts, is dust and water resistant.

Honestly though, I don't have a strong opinion on either configurations. Ultimately, it comes down to what the majority would prefer to see. No better place to hammer that out than here. :)

I'm still hoping folks will want to keep the basic shape of the "front loading logic card" (aka Burke's card) so that it would serve a dual purpose. A Marine's gotta phone home once in a while, right?

I like the way you think. A versatile card that can access an individual's locker and be used for vid-phone communication. Brilliant, I say. :D
