Post subject:  Lieutenant's uniform

Hi there

Been lurking here for a while, but haven't posted much, so thought I'd better try and be sociable ;)

Working on a Lieutenants uniform, similar to the one Gorman wore in Aliens.

This is the one I've been wearing to comic cons so far, though its not screen accurate and still a work in progress. Have made several improvements since this pic was taken (note, I am NOT offically a member of any costuming group yet, just grabbed this pic with some guys at the last B/ham Comic Con/Memoribilia show last year).

Image

Basically made up of an M65 jacket, OG-507 pattern trousers and shirt Olive baseball cap and regular army boots. The belt and holster were just grabbed from an Army surplus stall (holster doesn't even fit the toy gun I have properly).

However, I have made many improvements since then, including a screen accurate holster and VP70. (more pics to follow)

Have altered the jacket collar

And here are the patches

Got the name tapes from Camotech, Movie patches were from Patches N Pins (who are UK based, but strangely list everything in Dollars???). Got the US flag from a seller on Ebay if I remember rightly.

Must admit, its very tricky trying to get the correct size US flag patches with a WHITE border. Nearly all of the ones available online seem to have a gold border.

Very nice! I'm particularly impressed with the collar mod. Very professional looking. I tried the same thing but it looks like a blind man sewed it...

Thankyou for your kind words. The material I used for patching over the zipper hole was cut from a section of the hood. My sister did the actual sewing, as she's pretty handy with a machine. But its one of those things, if you keep practising you get better at it (its just I don;t have the patience, hence why I let my Sis do it for me :D )

When I came up with this costume I actually based it on the one you did, as your pics came up in Google images when I was searching for resources, which were a major help. So if you're impressed with the results so far, I will take that as a major compliment. :)

Hey SimonT you look like a badass in that shot! Great work on an often overlooked costume. I think it is awesome to flesh out the squad with an LT.

Thanks for your kind words everybody. One of the reasons I went for that costume is because I haven't seen a Lieutenant at any of the comic cons I've attended, so wanted to do something slightly different.

With regards to modding the collar, fraid I don't have a tutorial online. But it is simple enough to do, provided you know how to use a sewing machine and have patience, as parts of it are time consuming.

You need to get an unpicker and undo the threads around the zip to remove it. The material used for the patch was cut from the collar of the hood which I had removed (again, some unpicking was needed). I then just stuffed some wadding insde the collar to pad it (this stuff can only be bought in 1 metre lengths, so I just cut some out of an old padded work shirt I was about to throw out), then just sew the lines accross the collar using pics from the movie as a reference.

When sewing the lines, go slowly, don't try and rush otherwise the thread will snarl up underneath. If necessary, practice on some spare material first.

Hope that helps?

Awesome. Glad that was of some use!
So you did pad the collar. That was another area I skimped on. May have to revisit my own some day. Once again very nice.

Just bumping this thread back up.

Have completed my costume, which includes a more screen accurate uniform to replace the OG-507 pattern shirt and trousers I have previously been wearing.

First up, replica pulsemeter watch from Stapleton Productions.

Headset from Chef's Kitchen

Canvas belt (from Chef again)

Not a very photogenic pic of me displaying my lovely Olive Green BDUs, which were a special custom job by Chef. He also provided the printed patches on the shirt, which were really cool (he also does stencilled name tapes, like the ones used in the film. However, I opted to use my own embroidered tapes, which I got from Camotech).

And here's the completed costume as a whole. The name tapes are velcro backed, so I can get myself a couple of "Gorman" name tapes made up if I want to be character specific....

Really must give thanks to Caramac for helping me locate all the parts I needed to complete this and of course Chef who provided the majority of items being worn :)
