The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Thanks everybody. Hopefully I will get this thing strapped up, and possibly even painted this weekend.

Slots are cut for the webbing, holes are drilled for the rivets, and all pieces have been de-burred and washed so they are ready for paint and padding!

With any luck, this weekend I can button it all up.

It is easy to forget just how many rivets and how many feet of webbing is actually required for this! Suffice to say I hit a lull because I ran out of both.

2 yards of 1-1/2" webbing was good.
2 yards of 2" webbing was plenty
2 yards of 1" webbing was not sufficient.

1 pack of 'assorted' rivets is no where near enough! I recommend buying a pack each of small, med, and large from the jump. Or get a pack of large and 2 packs of assorted.

Anyways,
I wanted to a do a 'beauty shot' of bare metal like Schotti did and like 'jayW1235' did when he showed off his TE set.

However that shot is quite the pain in the rear! It isnt as easy to paint once it is assembled. It is too difficult to half-strap it for the beauty shot only to take it back apart to paint. I ended up with this half-assed shot!

So...yeah no true 'beauty shot'.

I did get the lobster plates strapped up and feel I did something moderately clever. Due to the potential need to take the liner out in order to do repairs, I decided to attach the straps from the lobster plates to the liner using "snap" buttons. That way the plates are held securely most times, but I can just pop them out in order to remove the liner in a few seconds if needed.

That part is going smooth at least. The rest is still a work in process.

Aren't the lobster plates usually riveted to the actual helmet, so the liner can be removed anyway?

Yes, they definitely are on Terry's new ones. The rivets are quite prominent in recent pictures. It is hard to get clear images of the screen used ones, though. From what I have seen, there is nothing on them quite so prominent on those. Even on Harry's site the pic is a bit small, but I don't really see them there. I may be wrong, but the factors I considered when doing it my way were:

-Worried the material of the webbing going between the steel and liner might create a gap that led to a poor fit up.
-Attaching the webbing to the inside of the liner actually helps hold the liner in and keep it centered (so the liner doesnt shift and interfere with the ear cup)
-Drilling holes in the steel pot is a monumental task that ruins a drill bit with each hole (at least the cheap bits I own apparently)

So i just went for a smooth outside look with removable webbing. If I find it pops off randomly, I will def be just riveting it to the steel later.

To get the Holes in my Helmet i just used a pointed punch and a Heavy hammer, just by hitting the markings where your Holes should be a phew Times You get on the Inside where you've hit a sort of boil,
Then you just flex off the tip of the boil just enough that you can get your Rivets in.

Doing it that Way You Save Money for expensive drill Bits.

Helmet is going fairly well. I was just about done with it when I managed to source a Mars Attacks IR sight. Now I need to pull it all apart and get back to chopping.

On a related note, anyone with images of an installed IR sight? I don't see how I will be able to install it without cutting the steel as well as the liner. There is simply not enough room inside the shell no matter how much of the liner I cut. Maybe I just have a big head...

Install the IR sight may require cutting the steel as well as the liner.
There are different IR sights available some are small enough to fit between blast plate and liner others require more space.
I had also to cut liner, inner and outer helmet.

Two examples:

1) TE: liner, inner helmet and metal helmat cut:

2) Spat IR signt and Helmet (only inner helmet cut):

A $2 spray can of generic "Kelly Green". Got it from wal-mart on the bottom shelf. I think when I weather it and put the 'dull/matt coat' to it I will get what I want.

I am testing my planned colors on my welding shield first before I go any further. If my welding mask turns out good, I will proceed on the armor. If not, I will try something else.

Well that is part of the thing. A few weeks ago Harry posted some photos that would indicate the screen used ones didnt actually need the steel to be cut either.

More pics in that thread here.
viewtopic.php?f=3&t=15585&hilit=rubber+band

So even the originals just called for the liner to be cut (not unlike spats).

However, this Mars Attack sight seems to be a bit thicker than an original. Either that, or the more likely answer, that the originals with functional IR sights were not intended to be worn for long periods of time. The site assembly may very well have been resting on the actors foreheads!

Or again, I just have a big head. Either way, to maintain comfort and functionality, I believe I am going to have to cut steel.

If anyone has a Mars Attacks IR sight installed, I would still love to see how you decided to do it.

Who's IR sight is that? Looks pretty sweet.

In any case, I was not very patient today. A painfully slow day at work allowed me some time to sit and stare at my helmet. That staring turned into an itchy grinder finger.

It is what it is. Fit is good though. Sight frame still rests against my forehead so I may work to push it a bit further forward since I already cut the hole...

And yea Christian, it is pretty terrible. I reckon it always looks terrible at first. Or so I hope... I should have my test piece done shortly and will re-evaluate.

Good to know I'm not the only one. I'm surprised this hasn't come up more often. Maybe installed IR sights aren't as popular as I thought? Or smaller headed folks simply outnumber the big-heads? I only wear a 7-3/8 hat...

Test piece is ready. This helmet may make another appearance in its own thread depending how it develops, but for now it is just an experiment.

I like it. I think I can tweak the mixtures just a bit and tighten things up to get solid edges (no brushstrokes or soft fading occurs on the screen used), but I like it. I think I am close.

I think on the screen used, the green looks even more light/pale than Kelly Green.

I may try to 'weather' it a bit with white chalk before I paint the camo. Maybe fade it a bit in a "used" way with that instead of painting a new crisp color. I just cant bring myself to go any lighter than kelly green! I mean... its soooo ....not dark!

Thoughts?

Glad your IR sight fits now.
Had the same problem (size 7 1/2).

I will get the color references from Harry Harris armour exhibition at NSC.
If you can wait a few days we might be able to get better data on the colors used.

Again amazing work!
