OK, so the long process of painting this thing may be sorted!
I used the same 'arts and crafts store' acrylic paints I used on my welding shield. I guess I mixed them differently or perhaps the textured black plastic simply produced a more gruff result than the bright smooth metal did, because the results were BRIGHT!
Wowza!

Then I did my usual artist charcoal weathering job. Better...

But still just so bright. Not the look I want.

I
think I figured it out. I had 3 problems
- I believe the smooth metal did not take my charcoal as well as rough plastic projects have in the past. I think it some rubbed off prior to dull coating.
- I had too much "yellow ochre" in my yellow mix. So I traced over the top with a more toned down version.
- The cheap gray paint I used was so thin I had to do 3 coats. The 3 coats prevented the "whispy" look of the screen accurate gray. Instead I ended up with large chunky gray. I had to go back in and minimize the gray as much as I could (paint over in some spots, scrape off in others)
I am now with this and am getting closer.

Coming up next I will go in and weather it further with shoe polish now instead of charcoal.
Then I will kick the crap out of it and let that metal pop out!
Not particularly relevant, but just an example how how drastically different my old armor will look from this one:
