The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

This (bad) still was taken from a blu-ray... It's the part where Ripley rescues what is left of the team from the APS in the APC and Hicks gets Ripley to ease off and stop the vehicle...

So what is protruding from under the left side of his modified M1 shell? Is it the liner with what could be a strap around it holding the IR piece in place? There looks like there's a kind of white metal hook or anchor fixing to keep the band in place to stop it riding up the liner whilst in use?

I think it's the cable for the IR light

Yes... It could well be... Across the helmet liner? Looks like it's had another V cut out above his left eye?

If you mean the horizontal line then it's just a rubber band which was used as part of the Infra Red eye-sight mechanism.

I've got some better photos but I'm at work at the moment and will be for the rest of the day and evening, with another early start in the morning so I may no post them for a day or so.

Funnily enough, I was chatting to Terry English recently about the IR sights and he mentioned that they were moved by a rubber band on a fulcrum - would be very interesting to see the photos Harry.

Here you go.

As Terry said via Matt the horizontal rubber band provides enough tension on the fulcrum to hold the lens in place in the retracted position as it's held at an angle. When the wearer pushes the green lever up it straightens the fulcrum, allowing the lens to drop down aided by the vertical rubber band. The circuit is then made by the large brass strip being 'live' (i.e. connected to the positive terminal of the 9v battery, via the bulbs) coming in to contact with a piece of metal on the lens which is (also via the bulbs of course) connected to the negative terminal of the battery. When activated the circuit is made and the bulbs come on. Simple!

I think in one shot, if you slow it down you can see the lens drop, the bulbs come on then flicker off before turning on again as the lens bounces on the brass bar!

If you want one though I'd seriously recommend that you stick to a Spat etc. version; I've built a few of these (three if I recall) and it was incredibly fiddly; so much so that I vowed never to make them ever again! Of course at the time they were made in a hurry to be used once or twice and then discarded so didn't need to be robust and reusable beyond a few days.

Wow that's an interesting insight... They'd utterly butchered the liner for that!

I have a Mars/Marcel one pending my helmet build... But if I'd not got one of those I know Chef does very compact tidy ones now also...

Ha! Have no intention of trying to replicate that!

That is a CLASSIC example of how much more precision and idealised a fan replica prop maker makes stuff...

Still no substitute for the original gear though, Harry!

Thank you for sharing! I love this kind of detail!

I do indeed... And the people here perfect them... And stitch count. Which I love.

Thanks Harry, that is gonna be very tricky to replicate exactly. ;) Kinda rag-tag and funky, but has loads of mojo. I will probably stick to my marsattacks/Marcel version that will hopefully turn up soon.
