The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Hey Willie, which Wierzbwoski set is the one that is accounted for? The one worn by Tom Woodruff in the "hicks lives' photoshoot, I am guessing?
(which also was apparently Hick's 3rd set, painted over)

Any idea if that is the same or different set discussed in this thread which mentioned a set sold (at the time) within 5 years of the post?.

Totally correct - that's the same set worn by Woodruff in the photo shoot - crazy how lighting conditions can make it look so different. Sadly the other two Wierzbowki's have never been seen since the film wrapped - at least not to my knowledge - so most likely they were scrapped or hopefully saved by a crew member and kept privately.

Were the stasis tubes made out of existing items or scratch built?

Thanks Willie - It's a credit to the popularity of the film that so much original stuff has survived... I bet the idiot who threw out the Crowe armour set would kick himself now if he knew!

So which armour sets are NOT accounted for?

Two Wierzbowskis, two Crowes, and two Dietrichs. Some *may* have survived, while rare, new discoveries do happen. The surviving Crowe and the Hicks/Wierz hybrid were kept in the garden shed of the film's foley artist for years before he decided to part with them.

Wow, I wonder how you know that? I don't know if he still has it but it was owned by a really top guy called Lindon who worked steady cam on rock video for me once (unfortunately, Idon't have a bigger pic)

Here are some older pics of the Frost "No. 2" set when it was on display in D.C.:

I wonder why so many of these screen used armour sets on display have reproduction helmets.

greeeaaat pic. The heart is so clearly carved into the paint revealing the aluminum underneath. Guess I have various scales of Frost figures to repaint.

Good question. 2 theories:

1- Considering only 1 character even wore a helmet after the hive battle (which was filmed first), 21 helmets would have been some crazy overkill. Who is to say 3 helmets were actually made to accompany the 3 sets of body armor? Maybe only 1 helmet was made per character? This would explain the abundance of replacement replicas paired with screen armor.

2- If they did make 21 helmets, perhaps due to their smaller size, the helmets were "rescued" from the trash bin a little more easily. From my sports experience, helmets do tend to 'walk off' on the last day of the season! Would be quite a bit easier and damn cool for cast and/or crew to just scoop up a helmet on their way out of town than trying to grab armor. So that would leave many sets of armor behind incomplete.

The Crowe set pictured above is labelled "No. 2", this is the Crowe "No. 1" set:

I agree with the theory of just one helmet per character... It's off but I was just thinking about the very same thing... To be honest, three sets of armour per character seems overkill but I'm not a set costumer so I suppose there's a lot of theories... Always having spare stuff as you wouldnt want to hold up a shoot for the sake of a repair...

If you think about the usage of the armor on the characters that were off'ed early, many of them had 'stunts'. Dietrich getting snatched up, Ski & Crowe flying through the air, Frost going over the rail (on fire). Even in a small roll, a lot of activity in a short period of time does lend itself to breakages. Never can have too much backup.

So... in other news....uh... That screen used Hudson body armor I mentioned at the Hollywood Casino in PA is almost certainly legit.

As noted before, the fit-and-finish on it was out of this world from the paint job to the neck bindings, so it had a strong case. I think the case is now closed as I screen matched it.

It is the set he wore on the drop ship. The skull is its weak spot, but as I said that looked like a sticker. They must have covered the old skull with a slightly larger one, as the perimiter of the skill is larger now than in the screen caps, but the camo pattern don't lie. There are obvious matches everywhere.

I believe it stands to reason Hudson, as an armor wearing character throughout most of the movie, would need more sets of armor than other guys, no? It is perfectly logical to me that he would have had more than the 3 sets.

We also know from the Ski/Hicks armor that they weren't above repainting another character's armor to fill in a need. Other character's armor that was no longer needed may very will have been retagged for Hudson later in the filming leading to more than his 3 original "screen used armor" sets floating around.

Nice attention to detail and investigative work! I know a lot of filming was done out of sequence as well, wasn't it? The cast reputedly got quite close...

I like the theory...

I remember a story about Bill Paxton being told to test out the armour for strength and he threw himself against a wall (or something) and it fell apart and so it was sent for repair and strengthening (?) so it is possible that more than 3 sets existed... Especially for Hudson and Hicks...

Great detective work bigbisont!

Sure looks like it. Also makes sense since the pulse rifle on the display with it was last seen at alien war, right?
