The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Hi All,

I had posted a couple things on the RPF, but decided to show it off here, too. I'm in the middle of a smart gun build, and I'm using my 3D printers to make the majority of my parts. So far, I've printed a test specimen of the front gun shroud (the square cage around the barrel). This wound up being fairly weak, and I decided that I'd need some design changes for when I go to mount the handles, AR125 footpeg brackets, and so forth, so I redesigned.

I've also started work on the shoulder lamp (using reference drawings of the alarm system base from here), and the headset (using a crap load of reference photos, and guessing the dimensions)

Enjoy!

I've been making progress on my build. I've decided that the shroud that I previously 3D Printed was too flimsy, but I've been using that as a base to see how other parts (the AR125 brackets I printed) will fit on it. below is the new CAD, but I haven't printed it yet.

The IR Tracker design I did is slightly modified from the movie stills to fit a Raspberry PI camera module inside it.

Also, the muzzle has been sized to slip fit, and set-screw onto a very long paintball gun barrel. Photos of the printed parts to follow soon.

I have been thinking about this for a while now... what color is the smartgun itself? I've been trying to figure out what sort of paint I'll be using on it to highlight the finer details I'm adding into it. I'm thinking that just using black will hide these details in shadows. What are your thoughts on it?

Looking great i can say the base color is black. but with the right weathering from what would be normal wear and tear it brings out the detail great.i attatched pix of my wifes rig to show how the weathering make it pop....

Right now, I'm just running a Printrbot Jr v2. It's got a 6"x6"x6" build volume, and I'm only printing ABS at the moment. I'm in the process of building a delta-style printer that will be able to print a 12"diameter cylinder that's 30" tall. I also have a printer on order capable of 18"x18"x18" in 4 materials at the same time.
