I 99.99% agree with you, but there were simplified versions stenciled on containers in Hadley's Hope (and on Fiorina 161 things get really simplified...).

But that's no excuse for lazy design work on t-shirts and mugs. Redbubble and Deviantart are full of poorly reconstructed WY symbols which are then taken as accurate by other folks. Someone took that wireframe globe image and PhotoShopped it onto Newt's green shirt at the end of Aliens and now a bunch of folks think it was actually in the film...
