The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

I'm starting to plan my first M10 helmet build, I've got an Austrian M75 in rough shape, and money for the project coming soon. I really don't know what I need to do, in terms of the electronics (IR sight, headset and camera) I want the thing to work, and could use some guidance with my first build.

thanks! :delta:

When you say 'work'.

What are you actually trying to achieve? Are you just going for a 'replica', or are you trying to get something that has some functionality too, such as a HD Camera to record stuff as you've gone around, and a working headset radio for communications etc.

The only reason I ask is that the two directions would require two slightly different approaches.

Well, work as in functional. Functional Helmets have that cool factor.

I assume you only want the IR sight to light up?
In which case, both Spat's and Marsattacks' kits have that function built in.

As for the camera and earpiece/mic - "It depends", on what exactly you want it to do ( Do you want the camera to record internally? Broadcast to a base station? What sort of walkie-talkine do you want to connect the earpiece to? and so on... )

What level of functionality do you want?

a) IR sight (light up & slide down): You can get that from Spat, Marsattack and Chef
b) headset (Micro & Speaker working):
You can modify the kit from Spat, Marsattack and Chef to have a real headset and use an adapter
so it can connect to a cell phone, PC, walkie talki etc
c) camera: You can make all helm camera kits (Spat, Chef, …) to house a real camera
(pin hole wire or wireless, record to SD cameras, WLAN cameras … you name it)

If you know how to dremel out the kit and add the electronics isn’t that difficult.

Oh, that makes sense. I can defiantly get pinhole cameras, and a cheaper Walkie with a headphone jack is what I plan on purchasing.

Yeah, there are a myriad of pin hole cameras out there.

From SD recording style ones that record to a card, to AV Broadcasting ones that transmit and RF signal that can be rigged up to a TV. (proper film style grain-o-vision).
You'll need to dremel out the back of the resin camera lens unit to allow the unit to poke out the front. All the 'gubbins' can be located in the body of the camera, or in a pouch under the lobster plates (see later).

You should be able to to find one that fits in the body of the camera pretty easily.

For working comms you can easily get a relatively cheap walkie talkie PMR (personal mobile radio), make sure it has a jack socket and can work on VOX. Store this in a pouch under the lobster plates, movie style. Then get a compatible earpiece/boom mic for your radio.

The Motorola T6 series is a really good budget option.

You'll need to take the mic unit and the speaker (for the ear) out of it and transplant, or extend the wiring, these into the replica Beyerdynamic parts, so make sure your kit has a hollow tube for the boom.
Embed the mic in the Beyer tip, feed the wires up the tube to the speaker in the ear. Patch that to the radio and you have fully functioning comms which you can use via VOX (or a switch located somewhere discreet).

I'm in the process of putting my first helmet together and wish also to use a pin hole camera to record footage from the helmet.

I've taken the guts out of my real Pentax 18mm lens and hollowed out the main body housing the lens attaches to, is there a Pin Hole camera you can suggest to use in this sort of setup. Ideally I'd like to record it to an SD card device or even my mobile phone if you can but I have no technical know how on what parts I need and how to execute this set up. Any advice or links to builds that have done this would be greatly appreciated.

Regards dan

I documented my build for a working helmet/headset camera many years ago.

You will probably be able to find a better bullet cam with internal recording now. For example http://www.dogcamsport.co.uk/dogcam-bul ... amera.html

The classic pinhole camera would either use wire or wireless for TV quality & type connection.
If you want it on your cell phone, PC etc. you could consider small IP cameras.

The IP cameras have a better quality and you can easily record, but you do need a WLAN connection.
