The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

I ordered my socks, mock turtleneck and watch cover today.

Boots, carabiner and chain (need more detail on the chain), and pants tailoring to do.

More work on the name tapes.

I’m sure the sizing is close but jigging it up is critical to not have it look like this:

Seems like a pain to do freehand.
Nice. Almost looks stenciled.

Thanks! I think the next one will be good.

I'm using a fabric marker (not a sharpie) and it is much easier to use. Less "bleed" outside the stencil, but it will bleed, if you let it. So there is technique that must be developed. It also stays wet for a while, so it can get on the stencil as you do sucessive letters and you hands (and everything else). Blotting after each letter helps with this.

I want this detail right, and I hope to have it sorted out today.

I'll have three tapes in total:
ASST. SUPT.
AARON
and
LEACH

I am now conceding defeat on the names:

You need a straight guide, so I taped the tape to the straight edge of a cutting board (scrap of PE).

I align the template with the bottom of the tape. I found this gives good alignment and also favors the bottom- quite possibly the way they did it.

Then after blotting each letter, to control bleed, I tape over it, so the tape edge gives me a clear indication of the edge of the previous letter. It’s very hard to see otherwise as my stencil is not crystal clear.

Once that’s done, we need to center and trim. The name is about three inches so you get about an inch on either side. I eyeballed the 1 and 3 inch marks relitive to the first and last letter. Then marked on the tape with a little square I use to set up the lathe. Once marked, I “chop” it with a new straight razor, which I drag across to get any threads I missed with the chop. Then carefully peel back the tape.

So there is a stencil used for the individual letters?
Was thinking it must take a very steady hand to make them that neat without one.
Those look great.
Deserves a separate tutorial thread, as the USCM nametapes were inked, and not embroidered, as well.

Yes I use a stencil, but it’s not as simple as “I used a stencil”. You need to understand how the marker is absorbed by the fabric. Sharpie “blooms” a lot- the letters end up much wider than the stencil. It also happens with the fabric markers I used. It’s a balance between dark enough but not blooming.

I have a brush tip marker (wider) as well as a fine tip one. Both Tulip brand I think. The stencil has parts of some of the letters missing, like typical stencils, so I go back and fill in the missing areas with the fine marker.

It’s fiddly work because if the letters aren’t aligned or they are mis-formed, it really stands out. Doing it without a stencil is obvious too. If production didn’t do it this way, they probably made an adhesive mask and airbrushed the ink on. Because even with my care and (limited) patience, they’re not as good as used for the film.

And next week I need to do the “Asst. Supt.” tape. At least I only need one of those.

I forgot to mention I picked up a chain I think is in the ballpark for the keychain.

Does anyone have any good clear stills that show the chain?

The Mart of Wal provided a chain and some large key rings for very little money. Like seven bucks.

It is really coming together nicely! I need to redo my dogtags, would you recommend the company you used?

They were great.

I think I mentioned them earlier, but if I'm not mistaken, it was mydogtag.com The owner is very helpful- basically loaded the cart for me so I just had to check out, and the tags were made within hours and shipped the same day (maybe next morning, but FAST). I like that I was able to do the debosing AND the laser engraving of the bar code in one stop.

With the chains as well.

I didn’t get a chance to do the shirt stencil yet. I may wash the shirt once to give it a touch of wear before I spray it.

It’s a pretty nice (brand new) shirt for about 12 bucks shipped.

My socks are in as well now.

So, we need boots, a carabineer and sewing on the patches, and it's done. I'm waiting on the sewing until the end, in hopes that a better patch will become available. If I don't get something, I'll just go with what I have. I don't have the spare cash to do a run of correct patches, and no one else is parting with a good one. I do have one last possible resource for making them, and perhaps they will be less expensive, but I seriously doubt it, since they are the supplier to NASA...

A coffee cup would be nice, and I found new ones, but if someone has a spare one, I'd be interested in that too. I'd offer my Tupperware cup from Alien in trade, but I only have two and they are very hard to get a hold of...

Coming back around on this a bit today.

I'm 99% sure I have the correct coffee cups now. Just finding the correct color, which may require the ol' rattle can... but, I'm feeling good.

Once I'm at 100% I'll spill the beans (in the event anyone wants the correct cup from this scene)

Had to do it…

So, these cups are not the easiest to find, but when you find them, the frame is either chrome or copper color. Maybe white, but black (which I believe to be correct) is REALLY hard to find. I guess I’ll be painting something.

The same company makes the same style in a normal size coffee cup as well. And if you want to go full-geek get a matching cream server, sugar bowl and French press.

Back to the search for black…

Yes!

But I was incorrect with the color. The stills in that thread clearly show them as having the chrome frame. Those aren’t too hard to find.

The black I was looking for, are very rare it seems.
