Thanks for the link to the vendor for the cap!

My larger ‘Serenity’ patch arrived today. There are some minor details distinguishing it from the smaller version. Have a look! I also photographed my ‘Weyland-Yutani’ sleeve patch to share with everyone.

Oh wow! That patch on the right was made by Mike Rush and me (boy mostly Mike) back in the day under our TML name. I’ve not seen one in it’s original packaging for many years! We made some ‘Serenity Through Confinement’ patches too but both of them have been copied so much these days I’m not sure what’s ‘original’ or not.

Hi Harry! Thanks for sharing your knowledge about these reproduction patches. I like these patches! I notice the larger ‘Serenity’ patch that I purchased is more similar to the original. In addition to it being the (probably) correct size, it shows the appropriate detail to the beak of the dove. I suspect that some repros were copied from an image, such as the one below. Notice that the beak detail is worn/distressed, such that it appears to be shorter, more blunt. But that is an artifact and not how the beak should appear. Or what do you think? A close estimate as to the size of the original ‘Serenity’ patch could be obtained by counting the stitches in the photo, which should be the same across different sizes of the N2B jackets. That way it would be possible to verify the patch size.

I did some brief looking around online for the ‘Serenity’ patch to see if there are other vendors. I found this sale which is no longer active. The patch design looked good and it is 10cm in size. I love the customer comment!

Using some white thread I ‘edited’ out the incorrect details of the beak on my large ‘Serenity’ patch. Have a look. This technique would also work to change ‘GONFINEMENT’ to ‘CONFINEMENT’.

Hey Harry, that’s okay I understand. Your patches are really beautiful.

I’m going to distress this patch with some sand paper and possibly some tea spray to get the desired worn out effect.

Just need the sage N2B jacket now. I found a couple in the US on ebay which were original military issue and already very worn and weathered, holes in the cuff ribbing and all. They also had the correct brown faux fur inner hood lining. Next time I’ll react more quickly to the sale. Shipping costs are a pain from the US to Europe. I may buy a new one here and age it myself. We’ll see. Many things to get still.

Well Schreiber you've convinced me: I am using the wrong sized Confinement patch! Your side by side comparison clinched it. Anyhow, I have ordered the larger one and will follow your lead on fixing the beak before I sew it on.

Hi Retrogarde, thank you. I wish to give credit to Nujack, who posted about the larger patch earlier.

It may be possible to instead of sewing over the black stitching of the beak with white stitching to carefully remove the black stitching. I didn't try this, but it may be a better alternative. I may add some detail that is missing on the eye of the patch. It would require a few small black stitches to emulate the embroidery on the eye, but since I am planning on sanding and further distressing my patch anyway, I might leave that detail as it is as it could itself simulate ageing and wear.

I'm still on the lookout for the appropriate materials to make the stamped name tags for garments and boots. Once I have obtained the correct materials, I'd like to make these tags available to people on this forum. It would be a fantastic way to take an impression to the next level and add another dimension of 'realism'.

There appears to be some variability in the fabrics used, ranging from cotton or poplin, to what appears to be canvas, to fabrics that are not readily identifiable from photographs by eye. Of course, it appears that paper was used in the boots. Canvas appears in the N2B jackets. Cotton or poplin (to make a sweat shirt material) is in at least one set of the trousers or shirt - it's not possible to tell from the photo I have. Other fabrics are not identifiable. I may just get whatever is closest in color and texture that is available to me out of convenience and ambiguity.

I did some distressing on my ‘Serenity’ patch tonight to make it look more aged and worn. I used some fine grit sand paper on it and rubbed an old dirty iron hammer over it. I think I might put it through the wash a few times also.

Here’s how it looks now. Beneath it is an original patch from the film for comparison.

Update on distressing my ‘Serenity’ patch. I applied some further techniques, and I am pleased with the outcome. I think it’s just about finished.

I found a source for these circular ‘Weyland-Yutani’ patches in Europe for a very reasonable price (€2,03) and ordered a few. There are some details that distinguish this patch from originals, such as the weave pattern on the ‘W-Y’ embalm, but this is a detail that I’m prepared to live with. Distressing may also conceal this difference to some degree. Moreover, there have been no reproduction patches produced yet that are 100% identical to originals, to my knowledge, although the one that I already posses designed by Harry is very, very close. I’m going to emulate different examples from the film, various degrees of distressing.

Here’s the product (top photo) and three patches from the film displaying various degrees of distressing. There are of course other examples from the film that I may use as examples.

Interestingly, that’s not Andrews who’s got the bag in that photo. Looks to be of the same design, however. It’s tough to make out what that object hanging from Mr. Aaron’s waist is. Identifying it might mean watching the film again.
