Hi there everyone, Schreiber here, first post on The Aliens Legacy forum.
I have always loved the look of the prisoners and staff on Fury 161 in Alien 3, even when I first saw the film as a kid in the '90s. I really appreciate the few threads on here addressing their costumes specifically and all the information that the contributors here have accumulated. It's impressive. I would like to join my voice to this conversation.
I find the look of the name tags applied to clothing and boots very visually appealing. To my knowledge, the tags never saw screen time and their purpose may as much have been to help production manage cast members' costumes as to add a little theatrical detail to boost the realism. The attention to detail in these costumes simply cannot be overstated. I have scrutinized the photos of costumes on the Alien Explorations web page and collected some photos of the name tags, some of which I present here for your reference.
The fabric on most of the name tags (such as in the above photo) appears to be some mustard colored light cotton or poplin canvas material. In at least one instance, it is possibly a poplin material, such as the photo below.
In the boots pictured below worn by Dillon (Charles Dutton) the name tag appears to be stamped on paper and then glued to the boot interior.
The name tags were very likely stamped onto these materials in ink and then heat set, e.g., with an iron. I have sought to emulate this with a rubber stamp. Here are some trials on paper:
I'm still looking for fabrics that are close to what was used in the film with respect to texture and color. Once I locate appropriate fabrics, I can then sew them into my clothes. My aim is to create something that emulates the prisoner costume as closely as possible. The long cloaks in the film were, as far as I can gather from interviews, produced for the film. I would speculate that this is also the case for the shorter partially quilted tunics. Based on what I have read on this forum, the trousers were also made for the film. I have some clothing items (e.g., olive sweat pants, grey sweatshirt) that are 'close' to those in the film. They need to be distressed and stenciled, however, to bring them closer to the look of the film. These name tags are a step in that direction.
