The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Man you've just made my day.... and it's only 0741hrs!

I've been wanting a side by side pictures of those two tins since forever.

Before you go mixing them up (which personally I wouldn't do... the tins go quite a long way) get a tin of Revell 46 (7013) and check it against your 'early' 170.

I think what you've done here is just show quite conclusively that the later 'brown' Brown Bess is quite definitely NOT the same colour one as the early 'olive' Brown Bess they used on screen.

Hi Rob,so is the tin on the left the right coulour because the right tin is more redish as brown. If the left tin is Right then i could thin it down so that it would be enough for all my pieces.

First time I heard that there were two different variants. Now that is quite a revelation !

From what I understand, having dug about in the apocryphal information that is the 'interwebz'. So "add salt to taste!".

The 'Olive' coloured one was the 1st variant, which is what is likely to have been used in the film.

The later 'brown' came in what I believe was called the 'super' range, (says on the tin I think).
What the actual release date for the newer version would have been I'm not sure, around mid to late 90's when they switched formulation to the new type.

At this time, they changed the formulation of the paint (apparently to make it better for spraying), discontinued a number of lines, and changed a few of the others (170 being one of them). It was later discontinued.

So whilst they are both '170 Brown Bess' as far as Humbrol are concerned, they are indeed two very different colours (as the eye can see from above)
Which has obviously contributed to the whole 'Brown Bess Argument', because without the information that the two colours are indeed different, people have been assuming that their colour is the 'correct' one because "It says so on the tin"

So which ever of the two is the 'correct' one. The other is wrong, and information should be adjusted to suit.

At the moment, all of the information I can find suggests that the closest colour match to the 'Olive' version of 170, is RAL 7013, which equates to Revell 46 and that Humbrol 186 'Brown' is closer to the "browner" 170.

And that is completely leaving out the 'lighting and filters' side of the argument. Purely just on the 'actual' colours as seen with the naked eye.

Plot twist, i say! :) That "old" Brown Bess looks just like Revell 46/Ral7013 which is exactly what I used and also what my eyes see in the various prop pics I've collected and seen.

Great, great find, thanks for sharing!

If you can't I'm sure one of us here can post some over.

Just as a complete aside (just because I have the picture in the library...)

Here's a picture of Revell 46 (left) alongside another revell colour, and a Humbrol. when I was on my quest for Brown Bess alternatives.

Here are a couple more picks just to Show the Color on the Lid might just not be the Same Color as in the tin.So the left tin is brown bess super, the middle tin is revel 46 the right tin is the other brown bess
Like i Said the paint in the left tin is totaly Different to the Color on the Lid .

Blimey, that's astounding...

How on earth did Humbrol ever get away with peddling that!

I only now the olive brown bess is Not an Option as you can see.So either i use the other brown bess, but i only have One tin and Thats Not going to be enough to paint everything,so it will probably be either revel 49 or humbrol 29 Not sure at the Moment.

Humbrol also changed their colour 67 significantly. Originally when I built these in the early 80s, I used it as it was the closest I could find to the Nostromo set colour. When I got some more recently to do some repairs, it was so dark it was almost black, and was therefore unusable.

This is an interesting thread...

However, I have one confusion from the above info.

Chef stated:

"The 'Olive' coloured one was the 1st variant, which is what is likely to have been used in the film. The later 'brown' came in what I believe was called the 'super' range, (says on the tin I think)."

However,

schotti stated:

"So the left tin is brown bess super, the middle tin is revel 46 the right tin is the other brown bess"

But you can clearly see the 'Super' Brown Bess is Olive (contrary to Chef's statement in which 'Super' Brown Bess is Brown)

Image

Not here picking holes, I am genuinely interested in this riddle that has alluded all Aliens fans for years.

(sorry schotti, stole the link form your picture - to get point across)

Tom

This was probably a mix Up from humbrol, the Color of the Lid should be the Same as in the tin but it's Not as you can clearly See.Chef was just as much suprised as i was.I have now idea what happend there,so i think only humbrol can realy answer this question.
