Post subject:  Finished my Shawn Morgan Flame Unit. NEW FINAL PICTURES!!

Well first I have to send a huge thanks to Shawn for getting this kit to me after some trial and error (stupid Canadian Customs office). Shawn sent it to me in primer kit form and I did the rest. It felt like painting took years as getting the amount of weathering I wanted was tough. I'm a bit out of practice apparently.

It's hard to tell in the pictures but the "metal" accents look amazing in real life. I used an undercoat of Stainless Steel color sealed in with a coat of clear gloss then another coat of stainless. Over top of that I painted with some color matched Bess Brown. Cloverdale Paints here in Canada matched it absolutely spot on to my real Brown Bess and now I have enough to last a lifetime! After that it was some gentle 400 grit sand paper to let the metal show through. I wish it showed up on camera better.

Thanks for looking! And thanks for a great kit Shawn. Absolutely worth the money and then some.

(Side Note: It's mind boggling what this paint does in different lights. No matter where I am it never looks the same color)

Thanks Willie!

I'm somewhat handy with the airbrush now and then but usually on RC Jets. It's been a long time since I've touched movie props and forgot how much fun it can be.

That is beautiful, the kit itself and your finish. Looks like the "real" deal!
Is this kit available still? I'd love to have one too some time.

I'm sure you find what we do "stupid", but, we have a difficult job compunded with a bazillion amounts of legislation that we enforce, and we do our best to ensure that regulations are met and that your goods enter into Canada. So, show a bit of restraint with your condescension if you don't mind.

Difficult job? I'm a full time Paramedic. Come talk to me about difficult. I did not come on here to start a fight. Maybe you need to chill out and realize I was being more annoyed than seriously angry. And yes I DO mind as I don't need to be addressed like a child. If you had an issue you could have done the mature thing and pm'ed me instead of dressing me down on the main board.

I also have nothing against you personally and don't want any bad blood. I personally feel that denying a solid resin prop that obviously can't be made to operate in ANY capacity whatsoever and isn't even a known real world weapon is stupid in my books. I do respect Canadian Customs but sometimes their choices make no sense. This is NOT an appropriate place to talk about politics and can we PLEASE get back on topic.

Less Canadian politics, more drooling over a well done prop!

I couldn't agree more. I was excited to see if people liked my work and that was all. That's the point of these boards is it not?

This has nothing to do with Canadian politics, Mike. It has to do with respect. Disparaging my colleagues as "stupid" for trying to do their job is just typical, but it doesn't need to be aired on a public forum that has nothing to do with complaints against my agency.

I half expected a simple, "Sorry, I shouldn't have written that.", but got this angry letter instead. It's just part of the job, I guess.

Anyways... nice flame thrower. Please to see that a decision was finally made to release your goods. Had it been me, I would've released it in a snap.

Post subject:  Re: Finished my Shawn Morgan Flame Unit. Pictures Inside

Canada Customs did not release the first Flame Thrower. I had Shawn build me one completed and it didn't come through. A non functional, fictional solid resin movie prop that has the same danger classification as a baseball bat.... I could appeal but whats the point? They will just destroy it anyhow and I don't have the time for the hoops needed to get it done. So I asked Shawn to send me a parts kit and of course this made it no problem. So apparently paint, glue and being in one piece is the big difference?

So let me get this straight...they bully me about something absolutely harmless that had a ton of effort put in (this isn't the first time)...and then when I log onto Aliens Legacy I get grief from Canadian Customs because of my opinion? That is why I responded angrily.

Regardless of all that, I apologize for offending you Sgt Baldwin and will be more careful with my words in the future. The very last thing I intended when I posted was to insult anyone.

Fantastic job on the flame thrower man! You did a great job with the weathering in particular.

Props like this make me want to break down and buy an airbrush kit. Beautiful!

Have you thought of darkening in the vent holes to make it look more hollow on the neck? Just a suggestion, but again, Beautiful!

Guys, no more arguing. This thread has been reported to the mods and we'll be reviewing in due course. We're at work or in transit ATM though so it may be a while.

Excellent job. The flame unit isn't done as often as it should be, compared to the number of pulse rifles out there. Shawn's work is great, and you finished it off beautifully.

Agreed it is a thing of beauty and I have one of Shawn's Lawgiver's which is outstanding so I 100% confirm he does fine work

No problem from this end. I just wanted to show the Flame Unit.

In fact I decided last night to do some shading and darken the vent holes up. Should have it finished today.

Looking really good.....does it have sling points ready for when your smart gun runs dry on the run back to the APC?

Author:  retrogarde [ Mon Aug 04, 2014 9:06 pm ]
Post subject:

The slingpoints are there, they just are thin so you have to look closely. The front one is right where the M203 piece blends in.

Ah- would it be solid enough resin to screw in some air-rifle sling swivels, d'yer think?

Author:  Pepperpete [ Mon Aug 04, 2014 9:48 pm ]
Post subject:  Re: Finished my Shawn Morgan Flame Unit. Pictures Inside

I was surprised to find the sling points on this are in fact steel. Shawn must have embedded them as a replacement for the resin casting. They are ultra strong and can take a sling and some abuse no problem at all.

Post subject:  Re: Finished my Shawn Morgan Flame Unit. Pictures Inside

Shawn was getting a lot of requests to be able to sling the flamethrower.

The steel tabs are embedded into the resin.

It was a great addition to the latest version.

A true work of art!
