Hi there! I've been wondering whether the muzzle part of the M240 Flamethrower was a found part or specially made for the movie. From the reference pics, it seems to have been two separate parts attached with a screw through the center. Were they custom made for the movie or is this a part of an actual flamethrower / blowtorch / etc.? Those are awesome photos. My guess is they were fabbed up though. Odds of finding an item that just so happens to encapsulate a pilot light source and the actual nozzle seems pretty improbable and considering they fabbed up the pulse shrouds from scratch, that assembly would be pretty easy. |

The pics aren't mine, one was posted here ages ago and the other one can be found on yourprops.com. Valid theory, bigbisont. On the other hand, lots of parts on the flamer are firearm or other found parts, then the whole thing was heavily dressed up with sculpted parts. Especially seeing the "rear couing" part of the flamer, I wonder whether this could not also be a found part. |

But the 'rear coupling' was likely a real part because it was functional. Its highly unlikely the talent was running around with compressed napalm in those canister. I suspect that coupling was functional as a quick connect for the hose that fed the flame units during action shots. All just theory on my end, but I see the end piece as a necessary functional part rather than a 'found part' for looks. *Edit*- In this video at the 3:04 mark you see the supply hose into the back of the flame thrower for 'live fire' tests. You see the hose tense up right before ignition. So I am fairly certain that coupler was chosen because it was functional, not for looks. I think the overall shape of the muzzle parts is too complex to be made for the movie - especially as the are made from metal to withstand the heat at the muzzle. Today this would be doable but in the 80s machining these parts would have cost more than the rest of the flame unit combined. I'd say these are found parts with only a few detail pieces added or slots milled into them. Might have been some kind of 30° tube connector/clamp. Cheers, Stefan |
