The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Sulaco Bay - Case 1/3 - measurements

Today is the first day of the miniseries about sulaco bay.
I must put the bay into right light and explain my steps and I will need a little feedback from you :)
________________________________
I´m trying to oscilate in the middle of the four views in this project (that´s why all things go really slow).

First view - of the creators of the movie set in 1:1 scale.
Second view - of the sfx modellers of the 1:12!? miniature
Third view - of the papermodellers and their building procedures and limitations of the paper

Fourth (most important)view - of how the things could work in the far future or Virtually make the real life USS sulaco
_________________________________

Case No.1 - measurements, position of second dropship.

First of all we have here the movie prop 1:1, but it is not completed. Then the sfx miniature exist...according to it the Bay has about 85 meters in lenght.
..but there is a problem...this kind of bay has not fit into the sulaco.;)

I´ve erased one space between curved pillars and obtained optimal lenght ~75 metres...like in my old 2009 measurements of the sulaco.

Image

Then I´ve noticed another thing...the position of second dropship is not in the axis with first one and the whole bay area.

Image

Just remember Bishop remotely put the sequence into the sulaco...The portal crane with dropship 02 moved to the right first ,
then ahead, above the pressure chamber door.

Image

Another notice: All doors marked as CARGO LOCK look s like doors to the one room...like store room...for powerloader or other bay staff.
.. It is nice that all the rooms can fit into the sulaco....;)

Image

Image

it is nice tat the bay fits in there perfectly...
I´ve done those two videos for your better imagination

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KOxD20m9hU&feature=youtu.be

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80lIbLL45v0&feature=youtu.be

and question of the day: How they transport the dropship parts into the bay in case of damaged wing...for example..trough which door? :)

I wouldn't go off that picture of the second dropship as it's a composite picture of the miniature and 1:1 set

I know it is a little bit outdated, BUT I am BACK!...after long 2.5 years, the work on the dropship 1:24 scale continue and I am happy for that.
If anyone is interested, born of my son interrupted the progress and.... me and my family .... we had some financial (job, personal) trouble so my hobby was the first thing to stop.
From now on I am back....not in 100% , but back 8)

We leave sulaco bay for a moment and focus to dropship.
I´ve optimalized the model a little:
LOADING RAMP MECHANISM
after deep research I´ve modelled this...
Image

aplication on the model
Image

and final measuremens
Image
Image
Image
APC fits in there perfectly
Image

REAR LEG FOLDING
And now the real challenge...thing that scaring me for years...
folding of the rear leg and the whole situation around the ladder behind the ramp
Image

after four hours some solution appear  ..finding optimal way of papermodel, real look and functionality
is the hardes thing ..Folding the leg mechanism
into tail section is chapter for itself....what you think.
Image
Image

The hole for the rear leg
Image
the hydraulics for the leg and how to put it into the space above the leg ...it´ll be another level....
Image
...maybe next time guys.... :delta:

1. Jan, so great to see you back doing this, congratulations too on the birth of your son.

2. Regarding the rear undercarriage, I know exactly what you mean....

Space Jockey....besides the leg you must calculate the extra space for queen
The rear leg an the whole situation around the ladder ramp is a real pain
There is a few materials exist and they exclude each other. :(
...well ...time for imagination

glad to be here

Ha, yeah I may conveniently 'forget' about the queen....either that or assume she can fold herself like some kind of distorted monkey lol!

Best,

..little progress...so far..

Image
two positions of the rear leg...the rest of the hydraulics will be magician´s trick :)

besides..some minor details added. (It looks like hydraulic fluid inputs and some air vent?)
Image

retrogarde thanks...How is your U.S.S.CONRAD doing? :)

I ve drilled deeper the hole for the rear leg
Image
..and done some "serious measurements" :D

Image

piston holder created (that orange thing with holes)
Image

Another 3 hours of serious measurements

Image
The tail section is drilled trough...but as you can see from previous picture it will not be enough....

Image

after another 3 hours i´ve evolved a piston with "mother" like ring for the rear section of the pylon of the leg. I don´t wanted the telescopic piston and decided
to go this way. One of the reasons is that: folded leg has a compact shape. negative thing is: there is an extra space needed for piston above the mechanism ( see half way closed pose)

Image

for the mid pose i had to create an extra hole in the upper engine section...( well ..the alien queen can hide in my creation for sure)

Image

and..how is it look like....

Image

the hardest thing is still waiting for me....the side hydraulics...(these pistons will be telescopic)....i must calculate the space for them....

FINALLY....... :D
hydraulic side pistons are finished......I´ve done them in closed pose of the leg because of the space around the rest of the folded things. The mother-ring thingee was enlarged and reformed...
and the tail section was added for knowing the border and operation space...

Image

Folded leg look really nice & compact.......:)
And how the whole dropship looks like.........(My rear leg nightmare is over  )

Image

enjoy.....;) :delta:

thanks...88reaper88

DEAD END - when deep research is waste of time

Ive created the railing on the end of the ramp...it is nice design thing...(seen on the functional miniature).
Image
then I realized that this railing will be in collision with the ladder for a ramp..
I wanted the best from both cases, but they negate each other....I am choosing the ladder(s) case.....
Image

first things first....the profile between the ramp and side enter of the dropship

Image

there is a an odd situation about this enter point......research continues....

Does this help any.....?
Kind of in the middle of a section-cut through the ship and figuring out this area myself.....I'm in agreement with the underside of the stair following the shape of the hull. I've not drawn the ladder yet. I'm wondering if it's collapsible somehow and folds into / slides into the platform at the top of the stair.

LEFT SIDE STAIRWAY
I´ve enlarged the hole for it and modeling it the same way as the rear leg....in the closed pose.

Image
The stairs look telescopic in the movie 1:1 model, but we have a papermodel , so I decided to construct the turning point for the last two steps of the stairway.

Image
the whole mechanism.....pistons were a real pain...(again :)

Image
stairway in opened pose. Notice the pink pipe. It is my papermodel addon for closing both the profiles. There is no such thing in the movie. If you wan to model such a thing
there will be more suitable some sort of rail road in the leading profile (like the rollercoaster wheels)

Image
Movie shot :)

Image
and..the dropship so far....enjoy :)

Rough dimensions of the Dropship model in 1:24 scale: 104cm x 62.5cm x 25cm
...the lenght of the dropship bay is another league...3.5 meters.

after some break we are her with some update :)
..I´ve optimalized the front of the pod. There are lots of reference photos about the shape and look. My creation is some sort of mix of all of them :)

Image
another four holes of rocket launcher?

Image
rear of the pod - booster rockets exhaust

The rockets:
There were lots of reference materials also, but when i first saw real rockets for 1:1 dropship instalation, I decided to make closest look possible.
Prop model rockets are lil bit simplified...have a look
Image

and finally the rocket pod full of upgraded stuff :)
Image
have a nice day....

For lovers and followers
the building of the 3d model continue....

Filling front rocket pods :delta: :)

Image

I´ve created the front pods armament. Some sort of inteligent bombs, collared rocket and old known rocket launcher.

Image

according to movie...two ships, different group of rockets:
left side

Image

right side

Image

from now on the dropship is "fully loaded" :delta:
enjoy 8)

Month has passed and I have a few pics for you.
We focus on the most important part of the dropship...the cockpit.

The piedestal for the gunner
Image

some plans and lot´s of measuremens

Image

and finally...both seats in their positions...uf

Image

I like a lot Ron Cobb interior drawng with full of monitors on the sides...

Image

here is my old dropship cockpit reflecting most of his ideas...

Image

I will try to make a hybrid between the movie, Ron Cobb idea and my old cockpit...it will be ....wait for it......EPIC
