This Friday is my birthday, and therefore the two year anniversary of starting on this metal armour quest. I'm determined to have something to show for it, even if I am bringing up the rear panting and sweating behind Schotti and Bigbisont who both flew past me to the finish line months ago ;)

Actually, Neil and Terran have been HUGE helps in getting me this far and beyond. I love the spirit of cooperation and unity this group has!

So first off, here is a shot of my painted (but unweathered) armour. I have always used an olive drab base coat, but I decided to take a risk and use a more kelly green, trusting that my weathering process would pay off:

I used the photos of Frost's armour as my general painting guide. I then used artist's charcoal to dull the whole thing down and give it a battle-worn look. Here it is after a fresh coat of matte finish (the shine is from just having applied the spray):

I'd saved one of Mike Rush's name stencils from back when I did my plastic armour, and boy oh boy did I fight with it to get the paper off. After I used it the stencil cracked into about twenty pieces and I had to pick them off with an exacto knife. Lesson learned there! The camera did a funny fish eye thing there, I swear the stencil isn't actually crooked.

I still need to mount the shoulder lamp brackets and drill for the kidney plate, as well as add graffiti.

Almost done with this thing! Those nice shoulder tabs were courtesy of Bigbisont, and Schotti just sent a shipment of pretty much all the other metal bits I need. All that will be left in plastic are the pauldrons (these are Chef's) and the leg armour (Spat's), but replacing those will be out on the horizon a bit.

Here we go, two years of hard work (with some long stretches of not touching it mixed in) and I have the armour put together! It's just pinned for now as I wanted to be sure of the fit before I got out the rivet gun, but it all works!

Getting the Chef lamp mounted with Noble hardware. Ideally this should be a two person job, I got impatient and did it by myself though.

And so of course I misjudged the height and ended up with an extra hole. At least I hadn't drilled all four holes before double checking my progress! I think I may weather the bottom of the lamp to bring out the detail a bit more.

Schotti's amazing armour plates arrived! This is as close as I'll get to one of those "all sliver" beauty shots...

But the painting process must go on, so here they are with an undercoat of olive drab. My base coat of green works best on top of the OD I've found, so that's what I'll continue to do. I'm seeing these plates getting a lot of weathering once the camo is all done. I hate covering up all that shiny metal!

Upgrading my helmet with Schotti's aluminum plates! First off, I cut down my lobe plate (made of plastic and hidden under the helmet cover). It was just too high and had been bugging me for years. I thought it would be too much of a pain to get to it, but I had to take the cover off anyway to upgrade the ear defender top plate.

On the side we have the newly installed ear pieces. I used regular screws on the bottom and then filled in the cross shape with SteelStik. Once painted it looks fine.

And the lobster plates. I'd thought these were done with olive drab webbing for some reason, but ObiHahn set me straight. Reviewing the BluRay made it clear that he was right.

I still need to attach the radio pouch and someday get a more screen accurate helmet band, but I'm really happy with these improvements!

Great update.
No worries when ObiHahn, Noble and others like yourself find out new things!
Another reason to see the movie again and start another upgrade project. ;)

Luckily I still had my stencil saved from years ago when I made my plastic armour. I'm really happy with how the stencil came out this time!

This guy is made of a scrap metal frame with wood and PVC, wrapped in foam. The head came from eBay and the hands are actually zombie lawn ornaments from Halloween last year!

Thanks Simon! I'm still adjusting his pose a bit to try and make it a little more natural, but overall I'm happy! That shot with the IR site and lamp on looks a lot like one of the promotional images of Frost!

Well, since 50% of the armour in these photos was made by YOU Schotti, I'd say "job well done" right back at you man! With vendors like you and Noble and Chef and Spat it was pretty easy to pull this all together. This is the costume display I have wanted for 25 years.
