Moosh wins! Lieutenant Desmond Nielsen is a main character in the series, and I wanted a photo of him in his Service C uniform to be seen at one point. I'm not playing that character (the actor is actually African American), but we're the same build and the name tape is the only patch that isn't sewn down so after filming I can swap it out for my own name. |

So I pride myself on looking for inexpensive ways to make props, or ways to maximize the usage of any given item. My ammo pouches made from an L.L. Bean Barncoat, radio pack made from the spare material from a helmet cover and camo sleeves and collar made from a Spat bandana all speak to this (obsessive) desire to not waste anything. This got me thinking about the Service C shirt. Does anyone wear it untucked? Hell no! Does that mean there's a rather significant piece of material tucked into the back of your trousers? Hell yes! Attachment: LTshirtback.jpg [ 94.21 KiB | Viewed 8528 times ] No one is ever going to see the material from the belt down, so why waste money on a second USMC shirt (and time making sure the material matches) when you can do a simple transplant with a "dollar donor" shirt from the Salvation Army! First I put the Service C shirt (marked A in the photos) on and had a friend mark the back where it tucks in to my trousers with a piece of masking tape. Attachment: Ashirttaped.jpg [ 117.11 KiB | Viewed 8528 times ] Using this as a guide, I marked a further inch and a half or so down (to give myself room for any possible "untucking"), and measured across for my cut. Attachment: Ashirtmeasured.jpg [ 126.89 KiB | Viewed 8528 times ] I then did the same on my cheap donor short (marked B), matching the tails of the shirts. Attachment: ABpinned.jpg [ 130.51 KiB | Viewed 8528 times ] Running this through the sewing machine and making sure the ends are hemmed gives me plenty of shirt tail to tuck in, and then a very nice piece of material from shirt A to use to modify the pockets! Thanks guys! I'm just trying to help where I can. A version of this tutorial will be submitted to the revamped colonialmarines.net to help out new recruits. So let's jump back in: the next step is to carefully remove the original pockets from the USMC shirt. Attachment: apocketremoved.jpg [ 115.35 KiB | Viewed 8499 times ] Next, using both the original pockets and photos of Gorman's shirt, trace out the new pocket. You will need two "tops" from the A shirt material, and two "bottoms" from the B shirt. Measure with enough room that when you hem the flap and flip it inside out it ends up the right size to match the pocket. With all the spare material from the B shirt it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to do a test flap entirely out of that material before touching the A shirt material. I actually don't have any ship patches. I have heard of some people having problems with the ship fitting properly. From your picture, I noted that it was very low to bottom hem of the pocket. I didn't know if that was intentional or you had to put it that low to make sure it didn't go under the pocket flap. Charlie |

Yeah, mine is a touch lower than Gorman's. viewtopic.php?f=8&t=13306 Some Sulaco patches are really oversized. The one I had for years was huge! Far too big for a shirt picket... |

You gonna add shirts stay to it? Will get rid of all those wrinkles and stop the shirt from bunching up. I cringe every time i hear the words service Charlies or just Chucks. Makes me dread Fridays. But lucky for me my company usually finds a way to stay in cammies. |
