The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

<it moved>

Harry, THANK YOU...really. I will get more photos of the vest at some point up here to try and make this all more clear. With everyone's help I think we can figure it out as close to correct as possible.

By the way, to those of you who want a real vest, I have put a feeler out there on the Facebook forum page I am a member of (where I found my two vests). I will keep you all posted if I get any bites.

Bryon, I can see I've got you hooked. You better start working on your marine setup. Dragon Con '15 should be a big one.

I know I still need to post photos of the back of the vest for you guys...sorry I have not gotten around to that yet (I will). I have, on another note, concluded some useful information towards my project. Again, this may have already been addressed here, and, if so, I apologize for putting you all to sleep with what you already know...I just don't have time to page through every thread on this massive forum to see what has been posted.

One thing I personally haven't seen anywhere is the details regarding the front control switches. Well, I have now confirmed what I wanted to...

Image

There's a shot of one of the smartguns...I had always wondered if there were any labels on the controls. Funny enough, the labels were actually the Kawasaki's GPZ750's labels! You can seen the "TURN" decal as well as the "PASS" decal. The photo obscures the "HORN" decal (it's between the red switch and the sliding black switch". Also, right at the dude's knuckle you can see a "LO" decal. Well, this is funny as hell, because look what I also just found:

Image

Yes, I obsess over every detail, and I'm going to get this right! The decals I found are correct, though they are replacement for dry-rub transfers that were actually applied to the GPZ750 switch controls. I don't think I am going to go through the trouble of making dry-rub transfers (unless it's easy to do); the decals would last longer and suit me just fine.

Also, from this, I have a 1982 GPZ750 switch panel on its way to me (the others that I have are 1984 switch panels). I *THINK* that from the photo above of the prop I may be able to tell which year's switches were used...it may just be my tired eyes, but I think there's a subtle difference and I'm leaning towards it being the 1982's control switch panel.

Great find.

If you're not sure never mind and post. IMHO better to have in information twice than zero times.

This is what was used on the Prop Store's Smart Gun:

Yeah, that's essentially what I have...it's still not 100% complete. I don't think the prop store needed to worry about a remarkable restoration of the gun.

Good evening my friends! First I want to say that I had a horrible shift on Tuesday (something extraordinarily sad happened) and needed a pick-me-up big time. I then came home to a message on Facebook from the artist I commissioned to design a custom smartgun chestplate armo graffiti piece. IT IS SO AWESOME...god, I wish I could share it with you guys. Sadly, I fear that if I share it openly someone will steal the design. I hope you guys appreciate it as much as I do when you see it in person.

I've been pulling a ton of screen caps to look into things with the smartgun to figure out what's up. Quarax, you are a genius, my friend! The photo you posted of the Kawasaki switches above made me feel compelled to look specifically at this. Others that are much more clever than I had long ago determined that the front control switches were from a Kawasaki GPZ750. I can't say that they're wrong...the truth is, I'm not sure really what to think. I looked at about 100 different Kawasaki switches and determined that the switches that I had were wrong and that the one Quarax posted appears to be correct...

This is what I had originally obtained (and I now have 3 of them...darnit)...
Image

I somehow didn't pay enough attention to that upper red-colored switch. Well, as you can see from the photo that Quarax posted, there is another Kawasaki switch panel that has a flat black panel in that spot. You can see it again here (I just acquired this):

Image

This looks correct, especially if you look closely at this screen caps (I'm posting the same photo of the movie prop as I did a few posts ago...sorry!)...
Image

Image

It looks to me as though the prop store will be useful...the got the correct switch panel...it just didn't have all of the dry-rub texts/decals on it. Interestingly, the switch panel that I got that matches the one of the Prop Store's replacement as well as that appears to match what was on the movie gun did NOT come from a GPZ750. The switch panel I got was from a 1981 Kawasaki KZ750. I'm not 100% sure if this was exclusive or not...honestly, if you look at these panels from multiple Kawasaki models from the 80's and early 90's they're pretty much all almost exactly the same. Perhaps the panel I got from a KZ750 was also used on some of the GPZ750's...likewise, perhaps the incorrect panel that I got from a GPZ750 was also used on some of the KZ750's. Either way, I appreciate the help you guys are giving me as I go along!

Also, if anyone is reading this that has a smartgun or will be building one, the place that I sourced the decals for the control panel has plenty of additional sets. I'm not sure what the policies are with posting links on this forum, so I will say that if you want a set, PM me and I'll direct you to the seller. My decals came in the mail today (pretty quick).

I still need to dig out that steadicam vest for more photos too...sorry that I still haven't done that!

Oh yeah, and as something totally unrelated, these came in the mail yesterday...

Image

I can't tell if they're repro, but from what I have read, repro jungle boots weren't made with the vibram sole, so I think these are true vintage boots that were never worn (they are brand new). They're a bit big (size 11R...I usually wear a 10 to a 10.5) but they'll do I suppose. Finding 10.5R jungle boots is a real pain in the rear. I'll have to look around this forum when I've got some time to see if anyone has ID'd the specific type of boots that Vasquez wore as I know hers were all black leather.

Finally, while I'm thinking about it, I will be going to New York Comic Con in October with my Ghostbusters buddies and really hope to see some of you there...you guys make me jealous; I so badly want to gear up with you and it drives me crazy how much time I still have ahead of me to complete this project.

those boots are 100% repro I'm afraid, they look totally different on the upper, the leather is too 'shiney' and the nylon weave is too heavy, but the quickest way to know is the part on the sole between the pattern should be flat with the manufacturer's name on it and the size.
If Vasquez and dietrich are wearing all leather US army combat boots then they are just as rare as jungle boots!

here is the best pic I can find of Vasquez's boots, they look like 1980's British army boots to me, which would fit with the filming, I have included a couple of brit boot pics as a comparison.

You, my friend, are the man! I'm actually glad that my boots are repro...I feel less guilty about them getting broken in if I am indeed unable to find the size that I really need. I've got to find a pair of those leather ones now...

Well, I finally got around to take some pictures of the back of the Cinema Products Model III vest...

Image

Here's a shot of the actual quick-release mechanism that is triggered when pulling the cable over the right shoulder:

These next two photos show how the leather strap over the left shoulder 'locks' into the metal chest plate.

Underneath the chest plate where the left shoulder strap connects:

The connector on the left shoulder strap:

For now this baby is going on the back burner...it'll be safe and sound...

I'm pretty sure my Switchgear still has the "Horn", "Pass", etc markings on it, haha! I wish I'd noticed that you were looking for those details sooner.

About the vest, though - holy @!#!Q$#^@#$ hell, you have got to be kidding me... Cinema Products actually used flush-mount picture hangers for the disconnect on the right shoulder strap?! Are you SERIOUS?! That is exactly what I have rigged up on my vest, and I copied the idea from Jesse DeGraff!

ALL THIS TIME, I THOUGHT IT WAS JUST AN EXPEDIENT JERRY-RIG!!!

Hey guys, it's been WAY too long. I am almost done paying off the steadicam arm. The last few months have been busy (actually, every month is), but I have a lot odds and ends to share here. Sadly, few of them will actually pertain to the smartgun, so I apologize in advance if it's boring.

First off, I went to a toy convention in September called Retro Con. Two very good friends run the convention, so I had to go. I was literally just walking around in costume (Rick Vaughn from 'Major League'), and was literally saying how awesome it would be if my Vasquez gear were complete when I looked over and saw this:

Image

The seller had them on sale for $30 (he had three of them). I really wanted to buy all three because I realized that this is the true US version, which was never actually released in the USA before the line was cancelled. I did, however, refrain from getting them all and thought someone else would realize the treasure like I did, but nobody else did. There is a UK version of this figure (you can tell by the collector card that comes with it) that is far more common and less valuable.

OK, the story continues. I went to Disney World in October and figured I'd have something awesome made for the trip:

Image

I wore this awesome shirt just hoping that someone would recognize it. I became very doubtful, but I was literally walking into Star Tours at Disney's MGM (now called Hollywood) Studios, and the line attendant said: "Aliens?! You're an Aliens fan right?!". Yeah, that guy made my day...the only props I got for the shirt, but fitting for it to happen on that ride I suppose.

I nearly took another shirt that I can't find anywhere anymore...I wish I had bought two of them. Check this out:

Image

Now, as for actual smartgun parts, I have sourced these:

Image

These are the compatible inputs for the Neutrik plugs from the smartcam headset. I have four of them and the seller I found has many more. If any of you are interested just PM me and I'll link you to it.

Finally, I felt compelled to look for Aliens photos as I'm always searching for reference, and I came across two awesome Aliens 8x10 photos that I have never seen anywhere prior, and they feature characters I never thought I'd see promo photos of...

Image

Image

I'm REALLY psyched to have the Frost photo (I know Dietrich is in the background, but I don't like her for obvious reasons...as in what she did to the highlight of the photo shortly after this snapshot was taken).

I am waiting to hear from my source for the aluminum smartgun pieces I need fabricated. Oh, and I must also say that if any of you haven't played Alien: Isolation, YOU HAVE TO. It is the best survival horror game ever made in my opinion...FANTASTIC effort by Sega for once.

I'd be interested in some of those neutrik jacks, if for no reason other than just in case I come across some accurate plugs.

Aaaah! I'm a huge Dietrich fan and I had no idea there was a photo like that available! Now I have to keep an eye out for one.

(I'm ignoring your hater talk BTW)

I see there is one post left for this page, so I'm going to fill it with something cool and then start up another post to begin page 6 of the thread as I don't want you guys to miss that post...

I decided I needed some new reading material:

Image

Image

Lance Henriksen's autobiography signed by both him and his co-author. I got this on Ebay...there is an auction listing from his publisher with a few of these direct-from-the-source, so I couldn't pass it up. I really hope there's some discussion about his 10 seconds in Super Mario Bros. the movie...haha.
