Post subject:  Officer kit (Gorman style) about wrapped up.

Been slooooowly hammering away at this setup. This is my 2nd go at a screen accurate "Officer".

Please disregard the general sloppiness! I know no self respecting Marine or officer would be quite so raggedy looking (both clothing and self)!

Recipe ODs:
-OG507 cap and pants
-Austrian version of M65 jacket
-Spat VP70 & Spat holster
-Noble "pistol belt"
-various patches/name tapes
-LT bar from the PX near my dad (retired army, so he picked them up for me)

Recipe Service Cs:
-RUC cap (I think? Purchased from UK)
-Dom Eagle badge
-Honcho Shirt
-1 3/4" Basketweave "Garrison Belt"

Collar modified right at the zipper when removing hood. I am no seamstress, so forgive the amateur lines. I also didnt sew in the "reinforcement" some screen shots show. Maybe later if I get more comfortable on a sewing machine I'll clean it all up.

These are the "nubs" from the epaulets that I described on the Austrian version of the jacket that are harder to completely remove. Again, if I was handier sewing, I'd be ballsier in about cutting it out better and just sewing it back together, but for now this will do.

This is the inside of the Austrian jacket just to show differences from vintage US jacket. (highlighting there is no removable liner, buttons instead of velcro, and zipper on wrong side  )

OG-507 pants

I still need suitable pants for the Service Cs. I have 'forest green' slacks, but they look too light compared with the hat so the search continues.

Quick note on the belt: A couple screen caps led me to believe the same basketweave belt may have been worn for both uniforms, but just be warned OG507 pants can't handle a 1 3/4" belt. If you hope to go the same belt for both uniforms, get a 1.5" wide belt, or get different pants!

Fantastic work man! Your attention to detail really makes this OD uniform in particular stand out.

Great! I also like the "background".
Now you only need to survive your second drop!

Thanks for sharing.

Looks great! Where did you get your shirt for the combat uniform? I'm having trouble finding a shirt that matches the pant color

Thanks guys! It's def not easy to get people excited for an olive drab outfit.

I actually don't have a shirt yet... :?

-I've been looking at OG107 "Jungle Jackets" (the slant pocket style) as they have the 'flap' on the front like Gorman's screen used shirt, but will require heavy modification of the pockets.

-THe OG507 shirt has decently shaped pockets (not perfect, but at least pointed), and is the best natural fit for matching the pants and cap. But it has a lot of exposed buttons where Gorman's shirt had velcro. They are easy to find though, and in more sizes from my experience.

-The OG107 regular shirt is similar, but has very square pockets and exposed buttons. It would need more work than a 507.

-My IDEAL grab would be the OG106 "flyer's shirt". I think it looks closest from pictures, but is a lot rarer than the above options. At least rarer in my size (XL). I don't know how it compares for color and fabric, but how bad can it be? All that army-issue stuff has to match decent.

So, yeah...those are my shirt thoughts. If anyone has other suggestions for a shirt base, or more info on an above variant, I'm all ears!

Minor update.

I got boots! Best I can tell, Gorman was either wearing Ro Search 'combat boots', or Corceran 'jump boots'. Without better images of the seams (especially around the toe), it is almost impossible to say, but I did find a sweet deal on some '83 dated combat boots with a good shine to them.

I also splurged a bit on a new mannequin after a solid fantasy football season. I was torn what to throw on it, but I was thinking that my Officer gear is the least impressive costume to display on a 'shelf', so I tried it on the mannequin. I dig it! It has a much better 'presence' about it now.

Edit: Sorry I don't know what happened to my actual post?

Anyhow, I can tell you from experience that the OG106 flyers shirt won't match. It's made of green nomex, so it'll be slightly shiny and tends to fade to an olive brown color, depending on how old it is.

Otherwise, great work so far!

Thanks! Yes it is the NECA egg I got as a Christmas present from the wifey. It opens and their is a facehugger inside. I think it looks better closed though. The whole thing is made of foam and I guess it has wires inside that hold the shape. I am guessing over-working it will weaken it eventually so I haven't messed with it too much but I am sure I'll change up the look from time to time. I'll probably post the full review over in the NECA thread here soon

Great info! Thanks for that. You may well have saved me a lot of trouble. I am still looking and good to know I can scratch the most expensive option off my list!

Post subject:  Re: Officer kit (Gorman style) about wrapped up.

I finally scored a dirt cheap OG-507 shirt that (almost) fits! This last weekend I finally just about finish this bad boy up. Even though no one will ever accuse me of being good at sewing, I am pretty proud of the modified collar.

I used some excess 58 webbing (from my noble ab pad) and a sharpie for the name tapes. The patches are regular ebay jobbers.

The buttons are of course not accurate and some day I may try to incorporate the reinforcement/ribbing pattern in the jacket collar, but I am pretty happy with the whole thing overall. As hard as it will be to leave the armor behind at my next drop, I think this thing needs to make an appearance.

Great looking display! Is that one of the Eggs that opens with the foam facehugger?

Yep. That was the one my wife got me for Christmas. The light was defective and it kind of became a 'thing'. Long story short, I now have 3 of the buggers!

Just a quick thread update (overdue since the updates actually happened at DragonCon last year!)

I added in the 'injured gorman' specifics of this costume.
Sewed up a bandoleer and slapped that on.

Since I sold off the "field gear", this is what i have left, but I still dig it a lot. It is a fun comfortable costume, especially with the dynamic of my wife in the Vaz gear at events.
