I was just curious to know if the ALIENS blu

-ray was supposed to look all "pixelated." I mean you could see all the actors' skin perfectly clear and sound is excellent, but there's like a film of pixels over that and you could see it more when the picture is dark. Is that just from the film transfer and is supposed to be there?

It's meant to be there. Sadly ALIENS is a very grainy film.

Agreed with Nick. Aliens is grainy.

Not 'sadly' though, just the way it is.

@carrief: A lot of blu ray films have digital noise reduction which softens the grain, sometimes too much. Have a read of this:

Aliens used film stock which gave a very grainy look, less obvious on vhs or dvd, but blu ray shows it as close to how it looks in the cinema. 8)

If I recall correctly, back when the Aliens: Special Edition laserdisc was released there were some complaints about how grainy the video was. Yeah, that's just the way it is and as we get better and better digital resolution, we start to see this kind of detail. The first blu-ray I ever watched on a big 1080p screen was Casino Royale. I remember thinking about how grainy/noisy the video was.

Maybe by the time the 30th anniversary comes around they'll find a way to clean that up without taking away the essence of the film. I'm just glad the sound is so good on the surround sound system felt like seeing the movie for the first time. Then after awhile you don't notice the grain as much.

Yeah, beware of wishing for clean-up. Look what happened to Predator.

The image linked in spoiler tags in that thread shows that DNR can remove film grain, but then makes everything look cgi, instead of real.

Be happy with film grain. :)

I watched Aliens on a big screen at pinewood. It was fantastic. Retro like an old tv. Perhaps it was the wine and the sausage rolls?

Unfortunetly as said above, aliens was deliberately filmed in a grainy way which has led to all sorts of colour problems. Cue the Brown Bess conversation lol ;)
