The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Post subject: Poor man's steadicam rig - Articulated TV/stand/arm

Years ago I saved an old TV stand/arm from being thrown away because I thought it might work halfway decent as a makeshift steadicam arm. I recently moved so I was cleaning out my closet and found the old stand. And have been trying to figure out whether I wanted to save it or throw it away.

Has anybody ever thought about using one of these for a smart gun? It may not have the shock absorption or quite the level of articulation as a real steadicam rig, but for somebody that just wants to get most of the way there it could be a cheap/easy way to setup a smartgun rig.

I can take pictures at home, but it's a close enough size and it's obviously meant to support a heavy TV. The only thing is the arm itself probably weighs 10-15 pounds (although this includes a heavy clamping plate and bolt to mount it to a sturdy desk/table).

It's actually pretty close to this monitor/keyboard setup below. I removed the large plate that would have held the TV though.

Reading your post made me [unhelpfully] think of this - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lX0MB7pJtKs "Heavy's good ..."

Good luck with you project, seems like an interesting alternative.

I don't know if I'll wind up doing anything with it. It'd be cool build up a smartgun rig, but more than likely, I will probably wind up offering it to somebody here for whatever it costs to ship it.

I have that EXACT arm in the picture (found it in the junk pile when my company leased this building) and had the exact same idea, so I saved it.

I haven't made too much progress though. I think I'll have to gut it and fab all new hinges to make it bend any direction except up and down. I know it will be a lot of work and be a while before I can make an honest effort at it. If you decide to take a stab at it, you better believe I'll be following this thread!

I think it could work...give it a go and see what happens!
