I picked up Titan Books' new Alien novel by Tim Lebbon at my local indie bookstore. You can order it here though:

http://www.amazon.com/Alien-Out-Shadows ... 1781162689

I'm 90 pages in and have a number of issues with it, but it's an interesting read. It's set twenty years before Aliens and introduces some neat new characters and situations, but then Ripley gets shoe-horned into the plot...

So is anyone else reading it?

FFS.
What are these movies called, again?

The first one was called R I P L E Y and came out in ninteen-ripley-nine. The sequel "Ripleys" featured 95% more Ripley screen time. It was followed by "Ripley3" and "Ripley: Ressuripley" which literally featured a room full of Ripleys.

Not to get into spoilers in the book, but there is a lot of discussion about how the Narcissus has just one cryotube. This is either shoddy research or willful ignorance as ALIEN clearly stated the ship could take Lambert, Parker and Ripley (that's three tubes), and you can even see the second tube in the film:

Page 145 mentions the Homer's Heroes! That's a pretty nice shout out!

The book moves along at an enjoyable pace to be sure.

I was not aware of this one (or had forgotten) so I'll get a copy to add to my collection.

But seriously....Ripley...again?!?!?
Why? For the love of god WHY?!?!?

Is she an alien magnet or are the aliens Ripley magnets?

Can nothing happen with xenos in this universe with her showing up in one form or another?
I mean seriously...I think people bash A:CM, not because of valid reasons but because it didn't include Ripley.

It's either Ripley, a Ripley clone or freakin' Ripleys daughter.
WHY?!?!?!?!?

Yes, but that story was told in the first three Alien movies (what fourth film?). Anything added beyond that diminishes the power of that tragic arc. This is not the Hatfields Vs. the McCoy's here, and Ripley was not "fated" to be the savior of mankind. It should not run in her bloodline either.

They threw Ripley in because they couldn't trust that a new story featuring the Aliens would sell. It's a shame, as the story isn't bad, and the writing flows pretty well.

I'd say you could make a decent drinking game out of it though:
If someone misses their children, take a shot.
If someone mentions how much pain they are in, take a shot.
If someone doubts their leadership skills, take a shot.
If a major plot point from Aliens or Prometheus is anachronistically introduced, finish your glass.

About halfway through just now - Chuckled at the Homer's Heroes reference :)

Apologies to the author, in the therefore-likelihood that they see this, but I have to say : It feels like fanfic.
The aforementioned Cryotube issues notwithstanding, there really is no need to have Ripley crammed into EVERY Alien story.
This, IMHO, detracts a lot from Aliens, and even Alien 3.

The "Nods" and dialogue callbacks only serve to pull me out of the story - "Game over", and so on ( There have already been a few more, I forget what they were though. )
Kinda like it pissed me off in the Earth War comic that powerloaders were used to fight the Praetorians - That was an improvised measure, done from necessity and desperation. Even worse was Ripley's initial appearance in Aliens Book II - With all the guns taped together.
No need.

THAT SAID [ SPOILERS ]

There's plenty to enjoy - And I really like the idea of Ash having dumped part of his personality into the Narcissus' computer. Kinda surprised that neither Scott nor Cameron thought of that.
Will see how the rest of it goes...

Also, I guess the author never noticed the grapple gun still wedged in the door of the Narcissus at the start of Aliens ;)
Unless there was another hatch :p

I see that he was forced to put Ripley into the story. That's interesting, and swings me a bit more in his favour - I wonder what he'd have written had he actually been given free reign?
