They'll be the fella's... Vibram Soled 3rd Pattern Jungle Boots. They still pop up occasionally on the Bay, if you look hard enough. But they are starting to become a little pricey. Especially for those of us with normal sized feet. |

Be prepared to have bid like all hell against the Vietnam War collectors for anything in an adult size. The majority I've seen in 8-13 size range have all been XN (Extra Narrow) which is fine for anyone with the nickname 'Johnny 4 Toes' after a childhood shovel-related accident, but not much use for the rest of the adult population ![]() |

the us boots are quite adaptable if you find a mint pair and want to put the effort into stretching them, I normally take a 10W, I have a 10N pair of Bata Vibrams which I have stretched, snug fit but comfortable. |

I have been a Vietnam reenactor for 20 years and I know jungle boots intimately! I love them, and the ironic thing about all this is, its the same as the 'gerber' controversy, its a film and they use the cheapest easiest things they can find, there is only the one classic image of hick's boot and the shock of it is................... he is wearing repro boots!! the leather is too 'shiney' the canvas and nylon is too course and the heel of the boot is far too straight, the real boot has a slight bend to the heel, the repro that were around at that time were the 'rothco' ones I believe, they were a very cheap and truly awful boot! uncomfortable to wear, horrible thin leather and the soles split really easy........................... I love the irony of the film world!!!! personally I wouldn't wear the repro ones just out of principal and comfort, but its kinda mad that to be 'right' and 'real' to the film you should be wearing 'non real' items like the boots and the gerber knock off!

I didn't think RothCo did a repro of the Vibram sole?? All the ones I've seen have been of the Panama sole? I could well be wrong, I've just never come across a repro of the vibram sole. I know the heel on the early 3rd Patterns have a small stitch line going vertically, but apparently later boots (but still 3rd Pattern) didn't have this. Even the current issue Jungle Boots based off the same 3rd Pattern do not have this. I assume it's easier to produce. |

Yes you are right about the heel crease, the ones without it are considered 'postwar'. The ones with it are considered 'period'. I'm not 100% sure of the maker of the repops but I know they existed, here are a couple of pics of repro vibram boots, check out the straight heel and the general cheap look to them

Well, you learn something new every day! I'd say the repro's are rarer than the real thing! I've never ever seen any personally. I must admit I'm no expert and can only go from my research around the inter web. I was of the understanding that Stitched heel boots have been found dated as late as 1980 and non-stitched as early as the late 1960's, made by the Endicott Johnson Corps. Another point of useless trivia for everyone. The Vibram sole was the more widely used pattern during the war and are generally considered 'easier to find'... How times must change! But I think it's fair to say that if you're wanting to go down the 'ultra accurate' route, then you are indeed looking for a Vibram sole rather than the Panama one. I'm now off to scour the internet for some repro ones. Just because.... |

I want to say about 25 years ago, you buy the cheap repros out of sportsmans guide. you could get them in black, green and camo. My uncle had a pair of the camo ones. I know Moore militria was making repro vibram soles, but he has been out for a long time. I have small feet and I cannot for the life of me find a pair of orginals in my size. |

what color were the non leather parts in the movie? There seems to be 3 parts... the main upper part, the ankle support strap and the very top trim. |

Wow I can see the quality difference with the enhanced screen shot I have a pair of 68'with vibe soles mine have the heel curve as you said unlike the ones in the movie shot you can also see a massive difference in the leather used I'am an old School English Goth and have a love of Dr Martins, I really have it agree the original nam boots are one of the comfy'est pair of boots I've ever had even more so than my beloved 80's DM's I live in lol |

certainly, if you look at the back of hick's boot in the improved image you will notice the rear leather part is straight up and down in line with the sole, same same in the first pic of my next post with the repro boots, however if you look at this pic of a real Vietnam boot you will see a slight curve to the rear leather part, its designed so the boot holds the foot better stopping it moving up and down causing blisters

Aah, gotcha. ![]() Mine have the curved heel, but not the seam in the middle and the leather is textured/rough, so are post-war, but 'original' then? |

If you've got boots that have a rough knobbly look to the leather, it's quite possible they are the English version of the same boot, and definitely post war. This design of boot has been adopted quite widely. The UK desert boots used circa 1990-1995 are of exactly the same design, but in tan suede (I've got a pair somewhere from when I was issued them). The Austrians also used the design for their jungle boot too, but the sole pattern is slightly different and the material is synthetic rather than canvas. |

Post subject: | Re: Boots |
rough 'bobbly' textured boots are indeed English versions, yank boots are always smooth leather, chef is right, a lot of nations adopted that design but none bettered it or even equalled it in my mind, the early 'gulf war' brit desert boots actually had problems with the soles coming loose in the heat............... good for a 'desert' boot! a lot of guys got yank boots instead, in fact the early gulf war yank boot is now collectable in itself! I know when the armour is on you cant really see much of the boot so its not really that important to a lot of people, but I can't help the 'reenactor' brain in me shouting it has to be the 'real' thing........................ even if the 'real' thing isn't the 'real' thing!! |

Very interesting, Gunny... Like you say, just like the Gerber knock-off knives by Explorer/ Scalemead. I have thin feet and found some original late 60s dates vibrams in 11N... Snug but an ok fit... Do we actually see the VIBRAM soles in the film, out of interest? |

you can see the vibram cleats on the side of the sole of hick's boots, a lot finer than the panama |
