Hi all.
Some of you may remember this thread from a few years back that I started about how I got the Colonial Marine fatigues used in Aliens that I won in a competition:

Anyway, they've been hanging in a protective sleeve in the wardrobe since then.
And I've started thinking maybe it might be better if they went to a better home.
But, the big question is - what do I ask for them?
As a recap to hopefully giving someone an idea to what to suggest to me, the history is:

Won them from a completion in Film Review back when, I think, Aliens first came out on home video.
They're definetly been used, as they are covered in dust and dirt.
They have the Bonhams auction tag in one of the pockets.
They fit me and i'm 6' 2", so they belong to a regular size male.
Who's a smoker - there were cigarette foils in a pocket.
Despite many valiant attempts here on this Site, its not conclusive as to who they belonged to, as there's no customising to them and the very distinctive patterns don't seem to match any of the shots in the finished film.
Best guess then is either: a secondary set of fatigues that were worn by one of the actors, but not visible in any of the takes used in the final cut, or a set belonging to a stuntman.
Oh, and I still have the congratulations letter from Film Review.

So, that's that. Would very much appreciate it if anyone could let me know - either here or by PM - what would be a ball park figure in the case of me deciding to let them go.

Very hard to gauge a price as they were won and not bought (so you cant go by what you paid etc). I guess it comes down to what you'd like for them and what someone is willing to pay.

I'll give you $20 for them!!

The only problem with a price is the fact that you can't work out exactly who wore it.

The odd flimsy way the buttons are attached leans me more towards a stunt guy, who'd only wear the uniform for the set up and performance of a stunt, not for filming hours on end. Only way to gauge this would be checking the way buttons are attached to known costumes in other collections.

Why not make some kind of competition and give them away or chose a winner who can then pay you...I have a feeling a lot of people will want that set.

That answers that question.

Man, I know Cameron came from the Corman school of cheapness, but saving on sewing costs??

But then again, Fox has always been known for micromanaging budgets!

Guys - The buttons are WW2 style British Army buttons of the type used on denim fatigues - basically a denim copy of the wool battle dress blouse and trousers... Intended for use to wear OVER wool BDs when doing dirty work...

The buttons had a metal shank and were held on the garment on a split ring on the back and were made this way to allow easy removal of the buttons for laundering... The buttons are a funny early plastic which do not hold up well to laundering...

The buttons... If secured properly with a stitched eyelet type hole in the garment to prevent fraying, are actually very strong indeed...

If you wanted the best price, I'd guess a specialist auction would be the best way to obtain it- but that's all about right buyer on the right day.

Over on therpf.com would probably get you a good value too....but as you say, the worn by whom, where, for which scene is hazy.

I couldn't even begin to hazard a guess as to what they are worth.....To me (and everyone else here) pretty much priceless. To a generic collector of scifi memorobilia? Unknown.

There are hundreds of thousands of these buttons available and they would have been no problem to source in the eighties...

ebay...it is a wonderful thing...start at a price you can live with though, rather than set a reserve. Because setting a reserve is really a stupid thing to do. Just start the freaking auction at the price you woudl take. Since you won them, that is totally up to you. They might go for more through bidding, they might not move at all. If they don't go at all, re-list them and try again. Works about everytime it is tried.

Okay, mind's been finally made up.
I've been umming and ahhing as to whether to sell these or not and had decided not to.
But have been told that i'm being made redundant and, with no sign of any potential new job out there, i'm going to have to be sensible and sell.
So, i'm following the advice of putting them on eBay.
I'll wait for the next Free Insertion weekend so as to keep spending to a minimum.
I'm thinking though of limiting the sale to just the UK and maybe US as, if they do go for a lot, insured postage amounts to a heck of a lot.
Or maybe offer them worldwide, with no fixed P&P and folk from wherever can contact me and i'll find out for them.
Anyway, i'll post when they're up.

You could offer them up on here first, Im sure someone will take them off your hands. Plus most people know each other in here so if there's a problem it can get sorted out sharpish. Just an idea
