The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Thanks! The patches were designed in PhotoShop (piggybacking on the already fantastic Nostromo patches floating around out there), and printed out on iron-on paper designed for dark fabric. I haven't used this before but it looks a lot more like screen printing than iron-on transfers I've used in the past. I then ironed it on to some scrap OD fabric left over from making a VP holster and had a friend surge the edges.
I'm going to try some light color fabric iron-on transfers too to see how they turn out next.

I agree with Charlie, those patches really rock.

you've inspired me to give that a go.

The amazing Jan Rükr has kindly contributed the following to my web series:

My very own Conestoga Class ship, the USS Conrad!

She only plays a small role in the story, and so sourcing a model (or building Jan's papercraft version) was prohibitive, so I am very excited at this development!

Costuming update!

So the crew needs uniforms. I wanted to take some of my favorite parts of the Nostromo uniform, but keep it distinctive. First off, the captain's jacket:

Attachment:
back.jpg
back.jpg [ 102.25 KiB | Viewed 11174 times ]

This is an old Dutch military coat with a high waist. It's a flattering cut on women without looking overly feminine (something I really hate in sci fi costuming). It's preworn and frayed in places, and I distressed the shoulder patches a good deal.

clips.jpg
clips.jpg [ 160.09 KiB | Viewed 11174 times ]

Damn this is a tedious process! I bet Sgt. Kitten knows that first hand though.

Getting there...

sleeveprogress.jpg
sleeveprogress.jpg [ 97.96 KiB | Viewed 11174 times ]

Phew! Now I just need to sew it down and age it a bit, then I can start on the other sleeve...

I also wanted to do a "Parker style" jacket, so here it is in leather!

Attachment:
backleather.jpg

I'm actually considering adding the laces to the sleeves, but using metal boot lace loops as I have access to a machine at my work. It might be fun to keep the look consistent in a way!

Attachment:
undershirt.jpg
undershirt.jpg [ 144.29 KiB | Viewed 11170 times ]

Even the undershirts are branded. I made the "subdued" patch by using light color iron on fabric on OD. It makes it look nicely worn.

Attachment:
flags.jpg
flags.jpg [ 115.98 KiB | Viewed 11170 times ]

I'm skipping the distinctive WY Egyptian wings and the more modern WY interlocking letter logo and instead putting Cobb's United Americas flag on the front of the coats and shirts. It's a staple of American trucking culture to have a flag patch on your coat, so this seemed like a great opportunity to evoke that image and yet clearly show that things have changed.
Funny thing: my wife whipped up this image based on Cobb's original, so I know she chose black for the background, and yet even in person it looks dark navy blue. Reminds me of the debate about the USCM Delta...

Lacing is indeed a hideous process. So hideous I outsourced it. :). But it really adds the necessary distinction. I love the flags by the way. Awesome work.

This past weekend we had some fun doing a combination location-costume-prop test. We ran through the action of the opening scene and got a good handle on how we will shoot this in November. These pictures are just for fun, they do not represent how the finished scene will look (for one thing, I won't be in it!). Having said that, I think they have a pretty nice "City of Lost Children" vibe about them! :D

Keep that pistol arm locked out tight. Wouldn't want the recoil to hit you in the face. ;)

Charlie: so noted! I don't shoot in real life very often, so my form is a bit rusty.

Frank: I'll post another shot of the mitre from above looking down, it really is a cool spot!

Magnus: professional model maker? Hardly! I've made maybe four models in my life, and three of them were for this project. I'm more an idiot savant with some of this stuff as I'm really just making it up as I go along.

Russ: thanks! Alien had such amazing props and costumes with tons of cool details. I'm really trying to get a taste of that in my project too. I've been wearing the leather jacket to work and have gotten some interesting looks!

So here's a shot looking down four stories into the Mitre.

The arrow is pointing to me. You can see the writing on the back of my jacket. It's a massive piece of rusty metal, and my cameraman was not pleased to discover the lack of a railing at the top!

Love the jacket and the undershirt. Costuming for the whole thing is brilliant and 'lived in'.

Rerto, I truly mean this when I say it bro. I so wish you and I lived closer dude. We would be best friends. I do all this sort of stuff as well, have worked in production design for films and so forth more times than I can shack a stick at. You and I my friend, we WOULD build better worlds together...

Thanks Major Gunn! That's very cool man.

So for Halloween I went to work dressed as a Dropship Pilot, but of course everyone called me Goose or Maverick (except one Polish guy who kept yelling "Mission Accomplished!" at me). I thoght I'd take the opportunity though to make another promotional image for my web series:

And one more just for fun:
