The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

I didn't want to make this thread to junk up the boards, but I have come to the end of the line and I need your help. I want to have a screen accurate Sgt. Apone together All-Con, or at the least, Dragon Con. No armor as I can not afford to get all the bits and pieces for it. I have a uniform coming in from MMA and patches to order from Patches n pins. I've even trained my mustache and practiced talking with cigars. However, there are a few things I really need help with.

1. Sgt Apone's Hat. What kind of hat and where to I get one?
2. What kind of belt?

If you want to add anything else please let me know. I want to do this and do it right! Thanks!

I cant remember exactly what website I sa it on, but SGT APONES ball cap was actually a ladies fashion ball cap from the 1980's. If you look closely at some of the screen garbs, you can see a little white tag with what looks to be a pale blue heart right where the brim meets the front of the cap. I believe a good choice would be a "low profile" (low crown) black ball cap. If you also notice, his USS.SULACO patch is not sewn completely on to the cap, the star at the top of the patch is above the point of the face of the cap.

Doc Vito

Correction to my last: the belt is a Standard USMC Khaki web belt with an open brass buckle.

Vangaurd uniform accesories company makes these, should be $12.00, or good old EBAY.

The marines all wore tan belts with an open face buckle.

As for the cap, what Doc said.

Cheers

Tan belts are everywhere (got mine off Amazon) and almost anywhere that sells WW2 US militaria (original or repro) will have them.
What Price Glory and At The Front are two very reputable US suppliers.

I'm so sick of that picture.

No offense.

At any rate I don't know what this tag is all about. :?

Image
Image

Nah I'm just messing around.

Here it is:

Image

(The "Waking from hypersleep/Mess hall" scenes were shot last. So the tag was probably removed, or perhaps another hat used for that shot).

As to the brand of hat, I don't think we ever did get 100% confirmation of this, but we are convinced it is the ROXY clothing brand:

Image

Image

As Doc already said, it's a standard black ballcap. So what they did was sew a "rim" into the crown giving it the look of a modern (80s) USMC 8 point cover. It's a little hard to show, but the rim can be seen here:

Image

Image

Near as can tell, the rim goes nearly around to the back of the cap (at least on Apone's). However if it's just a "trick of the light", the rim goes to at least half way around the cap.

Doc is correct that the point of the Sulaco badge extends above the top of Apone's cap:

Image

Now the badge was not sewn on, but probably hot-glued in a hurry. Some of the glue can be seen in the pic Dom and I posted with Apone looking down.

Apone was not the only one to sport this cap. Both Hudson and Wierzbowski can be seen with this hat (although they aren't seen from the front in the film):

Image

Image

But they are confirmed as Sulaco caps in behind the scenes pics:

Image

Image

It also appears that no two of these caps are exactly alike, probably due to being hastily handmade. Hudson's Sulaco badge does not extend above the top of the cap like Apone's:

Image

The hat itself looks like a vintage baseball cap with one of those old style adjustable plastic button closures:

Image

I replicated this cap years ago using a modern black ballcap:

Image

The only thing is mine uses a velcro closure and not a vintage plastic one.

What Doc said about getting a "low profile" cap. I would advise against this. When you sew the rim into the cap, it greatly reduces the profile. So if you have a low profile cap to begin with, it might be unwearable after you sew the rim in.

Another thing to consider is that my replica uses one of those inaccurate oversized Sulaco badges:

Image

A correct sized badge might have to sit higher on the front of the cap to look like Apone's.

Hope this all helps!

By the way... what tricks can your mustache do now? You said you trained it right?

Oh and can this be moved to The Ready Line? It's about wardrobe after all. :)

As well as the the added 'rim' feature, it looks also like Apone wears his cap fastened quite tight on purpose, so it sits high up on his head. The shot with him, Hudson and 'Ski in looks like he's set it as tight as possible.

My Bad on the belt...I was thinking of two replies on two different boards at the same time...duh..

Anyways...sent you a PM. I have one of Matt Nobles screen printed SULACO badges (as Ssgt Burton Showed in his post) that is the correct size, and screen accurate. LMK if you are interested, Ill hold onto it for you until I hear back from you.

Point taken on my "Low profile" suggestion Ssgt. Thanks for the correction.

Although that tag sure as shit looks like Roxy, there's a little snag with that idea... and I posted that the last time we discussed this topic at length...

Roxy was founded in 1990 and its logo in 1993. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roxy_(clothing). There is a possibility that it was a Quiksilver cap with the logo doubled up for who knows what reason.

Something else that may help... Apone was originally supposed to wear a flak vest like Drake, but with a different patch configuration.

Plus flak vests are awesome.

Sorry for the late reply everyone. I have been under the weather these past few days to say the least.

So can anyone tell me that the link I put up about the hat I found on amazon.com, this one, is any good?

Sgt Baldwin - Second photo was much better. Brighter days are better with Angie Smiles ^_^

I got a flak vest, see this post for details, that I am working on replacing the 'flak', as it where, with quilt batting. So would it be better for me to go with the Apone configuration or get the standard?

I'm sure it will do. If you don't like the end result you can always just get a different cap.

Not too sure what you mean. The normal flak vest patch placement (ala Drake) versus the unused Apone vest (with SFC rank)? Or Apone's onscreen armour look versus the unused flak vest?

I was wondering since I have a flak jacket if I should go with the standard patches or this not used on screen Sgt Apone Version? I hope that helps.

Okay that helps.

Of course it's up to you, but here's my 2 cents.

If you are trying to put together a screen accurate Apone, then you should wear what was seen in the film. Apone never wore the vest. I don't believe there is even a test shot of him wearing it.

While the hardcore guys here would know that the vest was "supposed" to be in the film, most people wouldn't and therefore wouldn't recognize you as Apone.

EDIT: ACK! I still didn't get it.

If you are wearing the vest no matter what, go with the Apone configuration of patches.

SSgt Burton - No worries. Chances are I will just make the vest I have a standard vest and use it as a loaner for some one I have in mind. Thanks

this is where i sown mine on. im not entirely sure how far down from the shoulder the flag or patch go, but mine was about 2 1/2" inches down. mine are also embroidred vs the screen print that was used for the film so distancing might be a little different. the only difference between Apone and a regular marine patch wise, was the rocker and colonial marine patch are replaced with the delta patch ( ie this :delta: )

This forum is truly awesome. There are a LOT of knowledgable and very helpful people out there. Thank you! I've been digging around for info on the Apone cap for a while and not managed to find this... I've also been scratching my head about the size if the embroidered SULACO patch for my cap... Very useful.

I'm having trouble seeing a sewn in band on the Apone baseball cap. The crown of those caps are fairly high, to me it looks like Al has just tucked in the excess behind the badge and round to make it look more military, rather than having it stick up like the other characters. If it were sewn the edge would be more defined instead of the rolled look.

Bit exaggerated but you get the idea
