I found a pair of these for $5 each at a local junk shop. Sure, the screen used ones were white plastic, but the metal feels nice and rugged. Having two does tempt me to paint one of them white, but I don't know...

Any thoughts? The only images I could find online are of other people's plastic trays that are "just like the ones in the movie", but as we know from the Sulaco floor tile debacle not every item claiming to be screen accurate actually is.

Looks good to me, and how do we know they weren't metal painted white?

I say paint one up, won't hurt it one way or another. I remember a year or two (maybe three?) ago someone found some trays and we talked about them, even going so far as to talk about filling them with plastic food!

You could also primer it and use a melamine paint (the stuff for counter-tops), that may give a plastic-like feel to it.

Another great catch.
BTW: If you want it white use white emeral paint.
Some of these paints would still allow to eat from the tray in fact are special made for this.
I did it for my metal tray and it worked well.

I want to say that Rob Slater in Maryland had made a bunch of these a couple years back. I believe he had the metal ones and did a vac form to make the plastic.

yes I did, could probably make a couple more. Funny thing is in the process there was extra on each side that I cut off, and when seeing the movie again , I should have left it as that part went under the table clamps

Rob, didn't you use food-grade plastic as well? I like the one I have, even thought i don't actually eat out of it. :)

If you do another one with the side tabs in place I'm sure there would be interest.

Find out if melamine is safe (should be...its for counter tops). Its also pretty hard. OR you can get liquid porcelain...

Bah, I just used Rustoleum semi-gloss. It is safe for food use (according to my trusty local hardware store), and all I'm going to eat off it is cornbread. I only painted the top, so the metal is still visible on the bottom. Not sure if I'm painting the second one though.

I came across some of these stainless steel mess trays online, so I decided to do some digging on the white ones.

I've learned the style is called "Style B". They are made by different companies, or you can get generic ones (for the stainless steel ones anyway).

The closest thing to the ones seen in the film that I've found is this photo:

Overkill? No way. :lol:
Would be nice to know the price for 1 or 1000 pieces.
Might be just less than one USD per piece. At this price one might find enough people.
