The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Dear All,

I'm assuming the actual PRs used in the filming of ALIENS used short 20 round magazines? Is that right? Or did they use the longer 30 round sticks?

I've got over a dozen original magazines for a deactivated Thompson... they are still mint in the grease proof wrapping... I was just wondering whether I could adapt the magazines by simply putting mag base on them. I've got hundreds of rounds of inert .45 so I could have a pouch with 2/3 spare mags loaded up with inert (albeit .45 inert but it would give it a substantive look and feel) and they'd be metallic and sturdy...

Any ideas for how to go about sourcing a fewer bases?

Kind regards,

2-1-6

Try snagging some 10mm (40. cal) if you want to go the authentic route. Sgt Kitten did a really nice tutorial (think he used 9mm) on making mags for the PR here:

Yeah, I used 9mm and .38 slugs to make mine. My display mag in my case is still holding up fine. The one I keep slamming in and out the PR, not so much. (Rounds came loose). Since the mags are designed for .45ACP, using that would work better than either route I took, but it's true it wouldn't be 10mm. (Although how they would fit 95 rounds of 10mm in there I have no idea, even if it caseless).

For sourcing mag bases, I was able to contact Evike and get a spare mag base bottom. I know there was a thread somewhere about trying to get a bunch of people to contact them in hopes of them being to batch order a bunch. I don't know if that ever got off the ground though. Spat offers resin spare mags, possibly he might be able to provide something (although I don't know if that is something he would do). Since you just want them for display, you might be able to make a mockup and cast it yourself; it's not a complicated part.

20 round mags.

The base depends on who's shrouds you are using. Every brand of pr has a different mag base
Matsucorp, Spat, SD Studios, HCG, Evike, they are all different.

I have an original 20rnd mag with a Matsuo resin base screwed onto the bottom. Works fantastic and pressure from the follower nicely pops the mag out a half inch when you trip the release catch. In a tight spot gravity would take care of the rest, but you'd not want to let it hit a hard surface.

INFORMATION: If you're using a real magazine, check the channel for the guide rail in the magazine well. You may need to dremel the channel out and widen it a touch in order for the magazine to slide in without any friction.

I was thinking that a few mag bases from an snow wolf with some adapter kits from Noble might do the trick... I'm only after props to fill up a Noble pouch... I'm not too bothered about them fitting a PR at the mo...

Finding the snow wolf mag bases is going to be your difficulty then.
