The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

Hey!

Awhile ago when designing my UACM Service C shirt I thought about making some U.A.C.M. collar badges and recently a member asked me to try and make some U.K.C.M. collar badges.

This was my first time modeling "pins" so I am not quite sure if I did it right, so I will order the first set for quality assurance and to be sure they make it through Shapeways printing process.

I made 2 versions each for the U.S.C.M., U.A.C.M and U.K.C.M. using 2 different fonts. The first font replicates WWII "U.S." collar badges as seen here:

Image

Here is what they look like:

Image

The other versions are using the same font as on the Screaming Eagle/Screaming Beaver/Leaping Lion patches

Here is what they look like:

Personally I prefer the second versions using the patch font but I would like some input from the community if they'd be interested.

Prices would have to be about $30.00 - $35.00 USD for a pair (based on Gold Plated Glossy). You will have to supply 4 standard butterfly clutch pin backs.

As pictured, you can get them in a variety of finishes.

Please understand that by NO means am I implying that the UA/US/UK divisions have to wear these, they are simply an option, and I will not be offended if you choose to pass. I know I will be adding a pair to my outfit :)

Once a font is decided I will order the first set for myself before I put them available to the public to be sure I did it right haha!

Great idea Melissa, especially considering the NO USMC insignia thread.

Where to order the second option for USCM in “Gold plated matte”?
I’d be interested in 3 pairs.

Nice!
I can't afford to buy a set unfortunately :( But I'd say that option 2 looks the best to my eye.

Ya, I hear ya on the price :(

As I was explaining to the other member, as well as "complaining" to my Mom (haha!), I'd LOVE, LOVE to offer them at cost, especially to a community I LOVE to be a member of. But even at cost, they are still $25.00 for a pair. If I marked them up to $30.00 (but then theres about $6.50 shipping) then Shapeways takes an additional percentage from the mark up I set, so I'm really only making like $3.00 - $5.00 on each pair. Every little bit I make that actually gets paid to me from Shapeways goes straight to my fund for my own 3D printer so eventually I can cut Shapeways out of my plastic items, and print them larger, for cheaper. Figurine heads and maybe even 1/6th armour would be a LOT cheaper if I had my own printer :)

I really understand that $30.00 - $35.00 is a bit steep for some little pins but as my Mom was trying to quell me, they are "custom".

I will likely order the first set today, which will be the second version in Gold Plated Glossy and it will take about 2 weeks to get to me. Once I'm satisfied I will offer them to the public and you can order them on your own :)

It's quite right. Small runs are always higher priced.

They are very cool!

It's worth it.
Even $40.00 USD for a Gold plated pair (option 2) is okay for me, if it's getting you closer to your 3D printer.

Thats very kind Frank :)

I just ordered the first set. If ordered together in the same file, they are a little cheaper, but that means I have to ship them out after, which means longer wait times. The nice thing about ordering from Shapeways is the convenience of them doing all the work from production to shipping, I just supply the designs :)

Keep the feedback coming and I will keep you updated :)

I forgot but I can also make EUCM and AUCM badges as well :)

I was going to put it there, but didn't want to put it there just yet, because there is a small chance they won't turn out. I am awaiting the approval notice which will be sent in the next few days.

Once I get the first set in hand, I will check them over myself, then post them in the Base PX with photos so you can see the finished product and what you will be getting for your money

Hey Moosh, it might be too late, but the pins probably need a small notch in the them. Typically the ones I have have a small diameter ring running the width of the pin (like a trench). This lets the clips in the frog actually grab onto something.

Hey Charlie!

Thanks for the note, I believe those are for like a "locking" type pin, and I did think about that, but the problem with adding them is Shapeways very strict wall thickness guidelines for stainless steel. I looked at a variety of lapel pins already available on Shapeways from other users and they don't have the notches, and note that a standard clutch back will fit them. I also have a collection of pins from my Grandfather I inherited after his passing, and many of them are straight posts, no notches.

If need be I am sure you can notch in some rings with a very sharp knife, the steel printing process actually starts out as powder that gets baked. The have a rule called the "Sandcastle Rule" where your model has to withstand being transported while in the wet powder state to the oven

Gotcha. Glad you thought about the problem ahead of time. I know I have done some prop work using thumbtacks for pins. It's easy enough to notch them if you have to it.

A little bit of good news to share :)

I haven't heard back from Shapeways regarding printability yet but...

It appears that the more pairs I put into a file, the cheaper each pair costs. I haven't tested it past 3 pairs in one file though.

One pair by itself will cost about $25.00 USD, and going off of my cost for shipping from Shapeways in New York to my address, Shipping is $6.50 USD, regardless of how many (up to 3 pairs in one file I've tested) pairs you order. I placed an order for 3 pairs and shipping was still $6.50 USD

A file of 2 pairs will be $40.00 USD, so each pair is then $20.00 USD (a savings of $10.00 USD) and $6.50 USD Shipping

A file of 3 pairs will be $54.00 USD, so each pair is then $18.00 USD (a savings of $21.00 USD) and $6.50 USD Shipping

If everything checks out, the estimated delivery date is May 20th for the 3 pairs I ordered today (April 28th)

So theoretically, 3 of you, say in the UK can order a file of 3, have one person buy it and divide it up and you'd only be charged $18.00 USD plus whatever shipping to the UK is divided by 3 for one pair :) Then the person who bought them would then be in charge of dolling them out to the other 2, either by mail or in person, say at a drop or something :delta:

Sound reasonable?

Good idea to bundle shipments for the UK members.

Im already in for 3 pairs and could also get additional once for other German members (on their request) to be handed over at Cons.
Shipment Germany<-> UK wouldn't make much sense IMHO.

I've been testing how many objects like these I can get in one file and it appears that with the base cost for one pair, 3 is close to the limit. I will try to squeeze 4 or 5 in though but I don't think it will be accepted.

Oooh!! More great news!!! At the time of writing this post I just received a notification that the pins I ordered are on their way to the printers, so it appears they've passed the Shapeways testing process!

We still need to wait and see the quality however. One time I made a small ring and it passed the testing process and was printed, then I received an email with photos of the actual ring and the detail was barely visible and they offered to refund me or send it anyway. But I didn't really have a good understanding of depth and actual size back then like I do now and my detailing on that ring was UNDER a millimetre high haha!

The raised detailing on these pins is a healthy 2mm high so there shouldn't be any issues there.

So exciting!!!

I'll keep you all updated :) :delta:

I'd also like at least one set of USCM pins, second option, in gold plate. Please LMK when you begin accepting orders.

Melissa, slightly off topic here, but a few of us were talking about Colonial Marines tunic and chinstrap buttons for our covers to replace the EGA buttons on Dress Blues & Service uniforms. Any chance you might be able to replicate something like that?

We'd need delta logos for each international unit, in both gold plate for Dress Blue tunics & White Dress covers, and black subdued for Service (garrison) covers. Tunic button are slightly rounded with flat backs and wire loops. Chinstrap buttons have threaded posts on the backs and are screwed into fittings inside.

All my headgear is currently back in the states at the moment so I can't show you what they look like, but maybe somebody else would kindly post some reference pics for you.

Up to now we've been replacing the EGA buttons with plain, flat gold buttons, so it would be great to be able to replace them with actual military style buttons with the Colonial Marines deltas on them. Please LMK what you think. :)
