The discussion of the Alien series of films and the props used in them is the aim, but if it's got Big Bugs and Big Guns, then they are welcome too!

The APC video, isn't that pretty much what they did for the film, just with overcranking?

Russ it's about 42" from the nose to the end of the fuselage. I'm thinking of scaling it down some... but not much. If you notice this one is missing the rear weapons pylons, I've built them but my piloting skills have put this frame through the ringer and it's time to build a new one with less kinks. If you want to get started with quad's check our the RC-Eye One. That's what I started with and I started flying in my living room. The "BAQ" as I like to call it flies very similar to a smaller one, but I have some PID tuning issues and piloting skills to work on.

Well, if you can make bucks, you can vac-form with plastic down to 0.5mm thick.

Now, that's pretty thin, and I couldn't say what the impact resistance is going to be like, but it should be light. The thicknesses can vary, from 0.5mm up to 4mm.

I'd have to have a look at my mustang, that's plastic with foam wings. Admittedly it didn't do well with a full throttle nosedive into the ground, but then I doubt much would have.

Major Gunn: you're correct about the APC in the film, although they were also (in most shots) using a much larger model. But when the Dropship lands and the APC rolls out, I think they were using a model at a comperable scale to this RC one. Looks amazing on film though!

I've crashed so many of those tiny little helicopters you can buy at Brookstones that my stomach churns at the idea of flying a model Dropship. I just know I'd smash the hell out of it...

Alright so BAQ MK I is pretty much on her last wing, MK II is coming along, she's a little smaller, a lot cleaner (although still foam looking), and I'm hoping in the end she'll be a whole lot lighter. I've redesigned the mounting system for the electronics so not only should that save a lot of weight but also make for improved performance. With this version I'm going to actually put landing gear on and fixed in the deployed position, I may have a landing ramp down, but I'm not sure. If the gains in weight and performance are enough I plan on having the weapons pylons such that I can flip a switch on the radio and have them deploy. I'm going to try and post more pictures and video tomorrow.

Personally, I'd leave the landing ramp in the UP position, but landing gear would be cool.

How hard would it be to "shock absorb" them, similar to the spring/hydraulic piston ones?

The only concern I'd have about landing gear would be if you land it off center. You could
torque the struts pretty hard and possibly bend them.

Or you could mount them in a partially extended position, which would remove the thin
nature of the struts, and turn them more into a "bumper" instead of an actual landing gear.

Lots of possibilities... and I'm really looking forward to your future updates!
Very cool project.

Alright, so you can see the start of what my work space looks like, yes that is a prop off of a Cessna-172... no the tips are not curved like that for some super aerodynamic performance... that's from putting them to the runway.

Alright so here's where I am with everything, I'm going to add some reinforcement to the gear probably coat it with some glue so it's less likely to snap. Still have to sand down all the edges, at this point I could mount the electronics and fly it, but since I know it's going to fly, I'm going to wait until I have everything finished and painted before I take the electronics out and put it up. Also I don't want to take MKI offline just in case I need to do a demo.

Hey guys thanks for all the support, she's coming along, still trying to balance out more detail with less weight so far things seem to be in order, I'm at about 200g out of the 300g that I have to work with. Not really sure what I was thinking when I built the cockpit... but I might do a little cutting to get rid of the sharp angles.

More pictures of where I'm at right now. Going to build a test rig for the weapons pylons so I can mess around with getting them set up on the servos and deploying correctly.

Well just wanted to check back into the forum and post the last update I had, I've been in the sandbox for the past couple months and will most likely be here for the remainder of the year so looks like it's going to be a while before I can do any real work on the dropship.

Shoulda taken a couple more pics before I left, but I'll try and have the wife take some more.
