Post subject:  ALIEN: THE REMAKE
Over the last few years, Hollywood seems to have drained the well dry of new ideas. Remakes, or re-imaginings, seem to be the in-thing at the moment, with Evil Dead out now, Robocop on the horizon, and even talk of a remake of The Black Hole in development.

So, how long before an exec greenlights a remake of Alien?

If they do, will they be able to do it right? Or will they throw out tension and atmosphere for kewl splosions?

Will they keep the classic alien design, or jazz it up for modern audiences?

Honestly I don't think it will happen and if it does it will be many many years away, most films that get remakes are not mainstream, whilst Alien was Sci-Fi it reached a far wider audience and still does to this day

Hollywood isn't as much "out of fresh ideas" as they are "un-willing" to hear fresh ideas. Same bad result I guess. I would know, I taught at a film school. In my time there, i saw litterally hundreds of fresh and awesome movie ideas put forth by my students, never a one to this day from stupid wood though.

Technically isn't Prometheus a remake of Alien, or as the Hollywierd types like to say now, a "re-imagining"? Though of course it's also called a 'prequel'. However, it is according to Ridley only part one of a new franchise with a sequel to Prometheus (arguably Alien unless we go with Prometheus being the remake) in the works. As is BladeRunner (though sometimes they say it's going to be the planned sequel that Ridley had in mind from the beginning)

Oh Ttask, you missed out the remake of Red Dawn. Along with The Nutty Professor, Dr. Dolittle, The Last Man on Earth (remade as The Omega Man, I Am Omega and I Am Legend (in order)) and dundun duuuuun....Highlander! :)

There is no real need to remake a film like Alien as it has stood up to the test of time. It still comes over as fresh and as scary as the day it was released. it's dark claustrophobic atmosphere still scares and shocks the sh~t out of people watching it for the first time or in the case of my wife everytime Kane's little friend makes a appearance :lol:.

true that, and when asked whether it's a remake or prequel ridley just skirts the question. It's not either, it's a 'reimagining' brought about by the question "what was the body they found in the chair?"

Prometheus struck me as simply anther event that happens to occur in the franchise at large, though many years prior to the events of Alien. Nothing remake about it to me for sure. If they are going to do anything though regarding Alien specifically, another...yet good...film would not bother me. Heck, they could simply call it Alien 4 and pretend Resurrection never happened, or has not happened yet anyway. Any "remake" of Alien though would likely spawn a remake of Aliens as well, and that would likely also be a nightmare.

when i first saw the title of this thread i was angry at the thought of aliens being remade......it's heresy....HERESY I SAY!

but if fox were to do a new take on the alines franchise i think the earth wars series would be a good step in the right direction. if you take the ending of aliens resurection where the betty landed on earth ( earth? man that place's a s**t hole), then they could always have an alien stow away underneath the ship (like the queen in aliens) and it could bugger off and start a new colony by itself ( i remember reading somewhere that a drone all by itself can morph into a queen providing there's enough quarry for it to hunt and use to reproduce.

but i do think that some films should be left alone as what they are,timeless classics. to be enjoyed by new and old fans of the aliens movies.

The problem with many remakes is they tend to miss the mark about what made the original a classic. I liked the Psycho remake, apart from the fact that it was literally pointless, a shot-by-shot, line-by-line, copy. May have well just colourised the original.

I regard Alien as timeless, I mean there's nothing that screams 1970's in it, apart from the computer tech.

I think they should leave well alone, but if they do touch it, please do it right!

I don't want to see "Michael Bay presents Jason Statham, John Cena, Dwayne Johnson in ALIEN".

ALIEN was re-released in theaters (with additional footage) in 2003. Prometheus with all its flaws has kept the franchise a viable money maker... Or if nothing else, with the prospect of at least one more prequel on tap, the franchise is still alive and kicking.

My point is that as a rule I find reboots/remakes to be reserved for one off films (such as Total Recall), or franchises which have suffered miserably from poor sequels, and need to be revived (Batman and Star Trek).

ALIEN is neither a one off, nor a part of a dead or dying franchise, so I see no need for a remake (at least not for a LONG while). Don't worry, I have Hollywood's address if I have to send them a letter. In fact I've already saved a final draft should the need arise:

Long and short of it is- even if they remake Alien, Aliens and the rest: the original is still there to enjoy.

It's like cover versions of songs.... The original is still out there, fresh and waiting- regardless of how the latest X-factor(etc) clone manages to butcher it.

Example: I'll happily watch the original Ray Harryhausen stop-motion Clash Of The Titans any day of the week and genuinely enjoy it....and that's not an 'ironic hipster' enjoy it- it's a piece of my childhood that brings back rainy Bank Holiday afternoons as clearly as Proust's madeline ;)

In contrast: I couldn't even be bothered to watch to the end of the remake CGI-budget-spunker. It was Transformers without the robots, basically.

I hope Hollywood never attempts to remake Alien it will pribabky get turned into some cheesy horror flick with Michael bay explosions and extra people just there to die that you cant even name. I also hope Hollywood doesnt try to remake the Goonies.

There's likely a list on Wiki. I was only picking those off the top of my head I knew were mainstream, ie large budget, massively famous and/or big name actors in the original.

Highlander isn't really a remake, so much as a mess of sequels, mixed with capitalisation on the series and spin-offs.

Highlander is definately being remade. They're 'reimagining' it as well. Ignoring the the 5 movies, Animated tv show, manga film, live action tv show and the spin off show, haha. So far actors attached to it have included James McAvoy, Kevin McKidd and Ryan Reynolds. The last script had them 'duelling' with sniper rifles. Which upset the fans in the community.
