Post subject:  face hugger build

right then......

just bought one of these guys of a fellow site member, and i was wanting to know if anyone has built one of these before?
it's a halcyon model kit (vynil) and i can't seem to find the right glue to assemble it with. i've also bought some gardenwire to form a metal "skeleton" for the little darling, that way he'll be more poseable, ie: the fingers and tail will be able to bend and hold their shape better.

anyone here able to help with these questions?

ta muchly

Super Glue: Crynoacrylate.

Plumbers pipe adhesive works a treat too.

These are great kits I really enjoyed building mine

Like the guys I used the same super glue but I never bothered with the wire in the legs as I wanted him on a diorama so he didnt really need to be posed that much

sweet, got lots of that lying about :-)

next question.undercoating: would citadel miniatures undercoat do? i'm unsure as the vynil is quite flexable and i'm sure it's crack and flake off. is there another way you guys undercoat the facehuggers?

thanks again for your help so far.

Not sure what those paint are but DO NOT use oil paints

Give it a going over with some sand paper then use acrylic paint or latex based paint, they'll stay moderatly flexible.
Just make sure it's 300% cured before you try to pose it.

I too have built a fair share of vinyl kits.

Most can be based with gray primer, but as always, test it on a scrap bit first.

However, if you plan on posing it lots, I'd recommend painting it with PAX paints, which is a 50/50 mix of acrylic and prosaide...which is a medical adhesive.
If you plan on painting with an airbrush, there is something else you will require to thin this mix, but I don't remember what that is.

The PAX paint will allow the vinyl to flex without making the paint job crack and peel.

You might also want to stuff the tail with something so that if you bend/pose it, it won't "kink" as badly if it didn't have filling.

Here's my hugger I did years ago. I used a different paint process as I didn't plan on posing it.

Wow, that's awesome! What did you fill it with, water? Did you use two seperate containers so the hugger stays dry?

Thank you Kimbo. :)

Magnus, I coated the entire hugger with Envirotex clear resin to waterproof it. Filled the tube up with water and dropped the hugger in! :)

thanks for the info guys. :)
been a bit busy of late what with the hospital visits and everything, but i did manage to get a bit of time to myself today. i didn'y get much done, but it's a start anyway.

picture 1: this shows where i postioned the 2.0mm garden wire for the fingers. i looped the wire between two fingers as i planned to make an all in one frame that could be connected together.

picture 2: after that i cut two lengths of wire for the middle fingers with hooks on the end. as i thought this could attatch to the "wire frame"

picture 3: this shows the wire "skeleton" for ron, so now all his fingers are posable and will bend and hold there shape a bit more easily

picture 4: and with a long length for the tail section, (again with a hook at the end) he now has some bones to help him become more of a poser :-p

the "hooks" were twisted over so that they wouldn't fall off,and i plan to stuff the tail section with something so that it wouldn't kink as suggested ( dont know what with yet....kitchen towel maybe?).

when i get some more spare time, i'll start to get him assembled and hopefully painted within the month...hopefully....

oooookay then,
after spending some more time (what little of it i get nower days) on the face hugger, i managed to get the tail section stuffed ( i spent 40 minutes stuffing a facehugger.....now THERE'S a line i thought i'd never hear myself saying!),all the wires properly re-connected and glued the little bugger together

glueing tip for super glue:
as some people know, super glue has a nasty habbit of glueing your skin together really quickly. it does this by drawing out the moisture in your skin and setting really quickly. i used an old gw technique, and i'll share on here for all to use on what ever it is they need super gluing
step 1: apply super glue to both area's that need to be bonded
step2: get some pva glue and put a splodge on an old plate
step3: get a cocktail stick/peice of wire, ect.and scoop up some pva.apply this to the super glue area, but be carefull....you'll only need a little bit,too much and you'll ruin it
step4:blow on it...no really....

the superglue will draw out all the moisture from the pva glue, and will set like rock. the bond is a lot more solid and less prone to breaking off ( i worked for g.w a while back, and when the last drill bit for our pinning drill snapped our key timer colin came up with the idea). to give you an idea o how good it was, he dropped a miniature off a gaming table (assembled by pinning and glueing the arms on to the metal miniature),and it broke, he did the same thing to an identical miniature that he used this technique on, it hit the floor and went *clunk*

nothing broke off

anyhoo....here's a picture of ron getting up to his old anticks again (mychevious likkle scamp that he is)
